Tehachapi

My daughter and SIL will be coming west bound through Tehachapi via Hwy. 58 next weekend. According to the weather report there is a possibility of snow. She's now worried they'll get stuck somewhere. Are any of you familiar with that route during a snow storm? Does it snow a lot, do they keep the road plowed, etc. Would you cancel the trip? Thanks
  • Daughter and son-in-law made it home just fine. No weather problems, but gobs of traffic. Lots of time traffic was down to one lane. Typical three day weekend. What is normally a six hour trip took nine hours.
  • usually there is enough truck traffic the road stays wet when it snows
  • 58 is a great road. Climb coming west is moderate. Seems like they get it plowed much quicker than they do the Graevine(5). As stated, you can wait in Mojave or there's several places at the summit in Tahachipi if they have to wait there.
  • Thanks all. I'm sure you have put my daughter's mind at ease a bit.
  • 58 is a fun road even in the snow just don't be in a hurry and stay out of the way of the big rigs you'll have a lot of fun traveling it,
  • If west bound wait, in Mojave for a day if they are not comfortable with the weather, but I would likely go on up to the top and wait there. Going up to the crest from Mojave is not bad. If it was snowing after I got up to the crest I would wait at the truck stops, big store parking lots, or one of the RV parks for conditions to improve before heading down.

hwy. 58 is a good road and if it snows it is usually just for day until they plow it. It does not snow that often where they have to close the road. I have been using 58 for 20 yrs. and have not had the Hwy. closed to snow. I have traveled and seen snow on the side of the road. Check road conditions about 50 miles before you get to Bakersfield for closers due to snow. If the road is closed then you can stay at a RV park right on Hwy 58 at Bakersfield until the road is opened. Call Cal Trans Road conditions 800-427-7623 for current road conditions/closers. You also want to check the wind conditions. There is also an app you can put on your iPhone. I would be more concerned about going over the mt. range right out of Ashland Or.
