Washington hwy 14

My 91 y/o aunt wants me to take her zip-lining at sklamania lodge for her birthday and I'm planning on staying at Skamania Cove RV park. Their website says that the Bridge of the Gods has an indefinite load limit of 16,000#.ooppss.
Will I have any trouble running #14 in my Class A DP?
  • We have driven it both ways without incident and it's a nice pretty drive. Make sure you visit the museum while your there. It's really cool
  • Bridge of the Gods is undergoing some work and the weight limit is reduced to 16,000 pounds.

The tunnels won't give you any trouble if you are under 13'6. The low points are on the shoulders.
  • The first time I was on the old hwy 30,was in '49,when my grandparents took us to Seaside from their home in Yakima. I do remember stopping at Celilo Falls and watching the Indians fishing,Multnomah Falls, the Vista House overlook.
Severals years ago,my aunt and I stayed at Memalose and toured some of the road and couldn't believe just how narrow it was and to think that was the major east/west highway for years.
I love traveling in Oregon and there aren't too many places there I haven't been, that goes for Washington as well, but have spent more time in Or.
It may be a day trip for her,but we're heading up to Goldendale, then east out of there to Bickleton to see the carousal museum,Prosser for some wine tasting and then Yakima where she and my mom grew up.My grandfather was an attorney there from 1900 till 1966.

At 28K in weight, I think you won't be allowed to cross with the moho at all...

It sounds like this will be a day trip for your Aunt- if you decide to leave the moho elsewhere, you might consider using the Old Columbia River Highway from Troutdale to near Cascade Locks. That's the route I always used when I used to take my Mother for a day jaunt from her home in Wilsonville, and she really loved the scenery!
  • I have driven that route a couple of times in the EX pulling a 35' TT,but don't remember too much about the road. At 28K in weight,I would be kind of concerned about that 16K limit especially when adding the 3700 of the toad.
I'm thinking about dropping the MH in Vancouver and taking the toad to Portland to pick her up and then head up #14. Last time I picked her up at Terwilliger Plaza, they weren't too happy about a 40' MH and toad in their parking lot.It was a tad bit tight, but when you've driven a school bus for 13 years and a step van for 31 years, accident free, you learn where you can push it or not.

Bruce and Sue, the last time she and I were over your way,she had a painting of that really neat red house on the south side of Goldendale that the rancher built for his Indian wife. The house was for sale and the realtor was able to take us thru it. She found the pix at a garage sale in Bend and remembered it from her first date with my Uncle Bill. They drove down from Yakima to pick up some dahlia bulbs for my Grandmother and that must have been quite a trip in the late 30's.
  • Article from mid July on the new weight restrictions

My guess is that the OP was originally thinking of taking BoG from I84 to the Washington side and the lodge, and is now wondering about crossing elsewhere, and having a longer drive on WA14.

From the west (Vancouver) WA14 crosses Cape Horn, with some grades, and views that might make flatlander copilots quake. To the east WA14 is a 2 lane highway winding along the shore of a big river. The Hood River bridge is longer, and just as narrow. WA14 has some good views of the mountains above the Oregon side of the river.
  • I'd be much more concerned about whether the rig is well under that 16,000 pound bridge weight limit. That's a drastic reduction from the earlier one (60,000 pounds)imposed in March...
  • There are three low tunnels on SR14, but I'm not recalling if they are east or west of Skamania
  • SR 14 is good -- just don't expect to get anywhere in a hurry. The only notable section that will slow you down, perhaps significantly, will the the ups and downs and curves a few miles east of Washougal. As for trucks, that's the other problem, they do use 14 a lot.

Cool on the zip line for your 91 year old aunt, what a neat lady and a great nephew you are to take her!
  • No. Lots of trucks use that road daily, so you should have no problems.
