best for a few days in Escalante

Hi Folks,

We think we will spend a few days in Escalante after about 10 in Moab. Question is where to stay. There is a commercial CG right in the middle (Canyons of Escalante RV park) and there are plenty of RV parks in Kanab on the south west side. Apparently there are plenty of places to boondocks in the monument (not clear it is one any more) and we can, but will have just spent 6 days in Dead Horse pt state park, so at a minimum will have to dump tanks and get fresh water. Anyway, what do you folks advise?

I'm surprised you bypassed Escalante State Park right there. It's very pleasant and has hookups.

Thanks Guys, we are limited on time - if we decide to cut short our stay at Dead Horse pt st pk, we have reservations for what looks like a great state park in the middle of the monument: Kodachrome basin. We don't have a hookup site, but there is a dump station and fresh water, and we're pretty self contained. Thanks again for the advice.

OK when we were there there were two commercial parks, neither was a garden spot but they had FHU and being flat dirt parking lots they were easy to get around in. We spent a week in one.

You won't be hanging around outside your RV in lawn chairs but since we were out all day exploring the slots and other sights in the area it worked out fine for use. Lots to do in Escalante if you get off the main road.

If you have a 4WD and like exploring then the drive to Hole in the Rock is great. You can actually do the drive in a non-4WD, the last 10 miles or so are on bare rock. Stop at the Dancehall for a look around. This drive is 60 miles off the paved road tho, but there is some traffic on the road so you won't get stranded. The road for the most part is what I call a wide high speed gravel road, good surface unless (as always out there) there is a rain that converts it to gumbo.

There's a lot of twisty road between Escalante and the areas mentioned as alternates. We're doing a multi-week Utah trip later this year and will spend about 5 nights in Escalante. I don't recall which option my wife choose for that stay.

Regarding some of the alternates mentioned:
Kanab RV Corral - about half the sites are practically in the main road. We gave up in April after 1 night. Between the road noise and noise from the hotel being constructed on the north edge of the CG, there was nothing relaxing about being in that park.

Jacob Lake - Kaibab Camper Village - About 4 years ago when we stayed the electricity at the pedestal kept dropping into the 103V range and would trip our surge protector.

Kodachrome Basin SP - Neat park off the beaten path near Bryce. There are a number of FHU sites in there, but get reserved quickly.

I'm really looking forward to driving the Burr Trail, I've had locals tell me it is one of their favorite scenic adventures.

Kanab and Escalante are quite a few miles apart. When we traveled that area we stayed at Ruby's and toured that area. Then we moved to Jacob Lake and toured from there while we stayed at Kaibab Camper Village.
