If you expand on this a bit I may be of help. I live in the lakes area of Minnesota. Give me an idea of your expectations. Will you be towing a boat? Any other activities?
As a Michiganian, I wonder where the "lakes area" is? I also like to fish. I've been to Lake Vermillion and Lake Winni. Just curious and watching this thread.
I've never heard a native Michigander call them selves a Michiganian. Are you new to the state? - likesadviceExplorerItasca State Park is outstanding. If you like, nearby is Long Lake Park in Shevlin. 10mph speed limit and stocked full of trout. In Detroit Lakes we have a few options. River Hills has direct access to Detroit Lake, a very good walleye fisherie. Country Campground is probably less expensive, but is very clean and has 6 lakes within 2 miles of the campground. Another campground I would suggest is Lake Carlos State Campground near Alexandria. Very clean and you can get spots right up front by the waters edge and park your boat.

Michigan has 64,980 lakes, according to the Michigan DNR. At least 11,000 are big enough to have names. About 26,000 bigger than an acre, 7500 bigger than 10 acres, almost 1200 bigger than 100 acres, 100 bigger than 1000 acres. Why go to Minnesota to find a lake?
When I was growing up in Michigan we still called ourselves Michiganders. People no longer like the sound of that?
Simple answer? Minnesota had more fish and good fishing resorts. I think the Minnesota DNR must have done a better job of preserving good fishing habitat.
Michiganian...Michigander?? 2 schools of thought...I use both. - jnharleyExplorerWe are going to have a PortaBote and small motor with us. Would love to camp on a lake and fish. I was a child the last time I went fishing in Minnesota on Leech Lake. I look at park reviews and it is difficult to tell what would be a good area.
- likesadviceExplorerThe "lakes area" refers to the area around Detroit Lakes. Detroit Lakes has 412 lakes within a 25 mile radius.
- Cobra21ExplorerEly, the boundary waters canoe area which is by Lake Vermilion which was already mentioned. Very hard to beat this area unless you like a big city atmosphere. This is where I would go for "fishing"
Brian - Barbilou_and_FuExplorerHighly recommend the Federal Dam COE northeast side of Leech Lake. SO beautiful and well-kept. Best fishing. Kind of far to do any shopping, but Longville is 30 minutes south with a grocery store. There IS a tiny market across the road from the campground.
"The Lakes Area" is probably referring to the stretch between Brainerd and Leech Lake, but the area between Alexandria and Detroit Lakes is also called The Lakes Area by some. - tatestExplorer II
