Too bad you're not a Michigan resident. We pay $200 for a travel trailer plate and it's good for as long as you have the trailer (non-transferable though).

Check with the tax collector in the county you will park the trailer. That is the office in Florida that handles titles license etc. I will tell you that park models need to be licensed as they are still considered an rv. You do not pay property tax on the unit only the land if you own the land. You do not qualify as a Florida resident by staying there six months. Again check with the tax collector. They will explain what paper work you need to produce if you decide to change residency to Florida. Also check on insurance requirements for the rv. You may have to show insurance to license it. None of this stuff is hard just takes a phone call then a visit.

All you need to do is to check Florida's rules and check the campground where it will be parked. I wouldn't just take anyone's word for it.

Well you got the answer, FL requires current plates. Since your trailer will be there year round you may qualify as a FL resident. If you spend 6 months in the state you're a FL resident. As a resident you don't have to pay the 13% tax on the site you're renting. At the campground we visit many of the people rent the site for 6 months, Adding a few months doesn't cost anymore because they save the 13% tax. This assumes they were already staying for the peak months, most expensive, and the extra months are not peak and a lot less expensive. Where we stay Feb is the most expensive and cost more than twice what some of the non-peak months go for.

So many folks leave their trailers In storage in AZ year round that they came out if you leave it and it has expired out of state plates they are going to fine you.

We've been through this recently for Florida. Whether used on the road or not, travel trailers in Florida are supposed to be tagged. If you want to call it a manufactured home, and pay real property tax, some county assessors might cooperate, but they aren't really supposed to, Florida law gets somewhat specific about what is a RV and what is a manufactured home.

To me, it would make sense to tag it in Florida. I don't know the situation for Virginia, maybe it would be cheaper, but even so, Florida also gets antsy about vehicles permanently in the state that are tagged elsewhere. They are tolerant about enforcement for long-term visitors, but there are limits to tolerance.

In our Michigan snowbirds family it has been vehicles going back and forth Michigan to Florida, tagged in Michigan. Vehicles staying in Florida get tagged in Florida.

I could get tricky, and tell them a travel trailer is "tagged in Oklahoma." Then show them the letter from the Oklahoma Tax Commissioner that says Oklahoma does not require personal use trailers to be titled or licensed. But it is safer to buy the optional tag, it doesn't cost all that much.

I want to say that if you put plates on it as a "trailer", then you would not ALSO have to pay the stationary "manufactured home" property tax.......but this IS Florida and the politicians are crazy and anything is possible.

Also be sure to check with the people where you park it. Our site where we have ours operates under a county use permit. Couple years ago the county came in and any RV not licensed with DMV got a property tax bill because they counted the RV as real estate attached to the site. Not saying your place is like that or not. Just saying learn all the ins and outs before you make a decision.
