How we made a fabric headboard with pockets

So, we've always struggled a bit with storage in the trailer which is expected with 6 people and a dog in a trailer. We've been working on getting everything more organized and one of our nagging problems is where to put things when we get in bed. Our bed is just that, there's no end tables or storage to be had, it's just a mattress. The small things like glasses, phones, etc. typically get stuffed on the side of the mattress and hope it's there (in one piece) when we wake up.

Well, Sandie recently saw photos of a faux headboard that someone made out of fabric which included storage pockets. After seeing that she decided it was just what we needed and I think she was right. We had left over fabric and curtain rods, so this project didn't costing us anything extra. Check out the video below to see how we did it.

In the end, we ended up sprucing up our sleeping area while giving us somewhere to keep a few things while we sleep. It's a win in my book and the price was just right.

What do you think? Has anyone else done anything similar?
  • Yes, we have a window at the head of the bed, so a headboard could not go too high. We just used a piece of masonite board, and drew a shape that we liked. Height was measured from just below mattress surface to bottom edge of window. Covered it with fabric, did frilly puff cushion border around top and down sides. Attached to wall with velcro and screws.

Sounds like a good way to add a headboard. My wife has been asking for something padded for my daughters room for a while, so I'm sure I'll eventually be cutting a backer for her.
  • Very cool! I wanted to see a few more seconds of the finished head board and its pockets to see how it all came together.
  • this is not meant to take away from your fine efforts to make a nice headboard, but I think I would just buy a shoe pocket hangar..the kind that hangs on a closet door.... then cut in half and hang them side by side. You can buy as plain or as fancy as you like.

Thanks, I can post some photos of the pockets later. I ended up cutting a clip out at the end because it seemed repetitive, but I should have probably left it there.

That would work, but I'd just as soon put my wife to work;) She likes the projects and already had the fabric, so it didn't cost us anything. Regardless of the cost I'd rather not hear her complain about something not being pretty enough.
  • Great thinking......I also use the shoe hangers on the sides of our bed to store items in. Works for shoes, and other small items. You could also use the fabric you have leftover as well and make your own. The blanket usually hides them when the bed is made up.

Finding a place for shoes is on our short list of to-do's. The way our bed is setup there's no frame below it, but I'm thinking we could make something similar work below our sofa. We still have some fabric left, so we might as well make something else:B
  • I tried to view your video today and YouTube said it was private so I could not view it. I would love to see what you did with the headboard.

Probably because the op's post is 8 years old. And I doubt they respond as they haven't been on here since.
