Spare tire carrier question

Ok, I didn't know you needed to shift weight back.
We have a rear kitchen model, and seems like we have always needed more pin weight to decrease chucking.

I was looking at that Bal tire carrier, and I probably would have gone for that myself if it had been available when I was relocating my spare.

Good luck in your modification. It has always been enjoyable to make our camper better, even if it does drive my wife nuts. Lol.

Seriously, I had considered an idea like that too but want to move some weight aft when possible. I replaced the single 12v battery with 4 - 6v GC batteries, an angle iron frame to help support them and a heavy TrippLite inverter, so I'm hoping to move the spare back to where its just in front of the leading axle. After I get a few more of these things done, I'm getting a weigh-in to make sure my "ideas" haven't created any big problems.

I use a small chain hoist which is hung inside my front compartment of the fiver, and the chain goes down through a hole I cut so that I can hoist the spare up against the bottom in between the front landing gear(I have the polar package).

There's just enough room between the truck and camper for me to open the front compartment and lower/raise the tire. It's easy to put the flat in the same place as it doesn't have to be right under the hole, the hoist and chain will pull it over and under and up. Have had it like this for several years with no problems.

No problem. DH wanted to add a cargo tray as well but had to leave room for headlights and bugs. I'm working on a gray water tank where the spare went under the truck since our ooollllddd TC didn't come with one, just black tank. Just about done with that, then enclose the rack we made to carry the "blue boy" on the back of camper to carry small grill and tackle bag to free up furcamper space in back seat. Never seems to end but always hopeful.

I hate sounding negative because thats a great idea but it won't work. The front receiver hitch is already being used to support the kayaks and I apologize for not posting a photo of my RV set-up.

Thanks again everyone. You've answered my question and now I'll see what the junk yard wants for one and compare that against the Lippert price and then choose.

I like the bed frame solution too and will consider it. The BAL looks neat and I like the idea that it could be recycled from RV to RV without a lot of trouble.

Yes, I have used a P/U tire winch from a junkyard to build my own and it worked great. I always look for used bed frame angles in scrap piles... one of the most plentiful natural resources around. I've built several things with them! Craig

Thanks everyone and apologies for the delay. I moved the RV to cut down a simple tree beside where it has been. As we all know, nothing's simple as the tree spun, broke the rope it was being pulled with and ended up balanced on a couple of small tree limbs above the porch and power lines. Got it down okay but wasn't able to chat much until it was done. Plus, I'm 66 and this yard work isn't as simple as it used to be.

We have the BAL carrier that is designed to be installed if you have an enclosed underbelly. Works great. It was a little difficult to slip my fingers up behind the coroplast to get some of the nuts to thread onto the bolts.
