Almost joined the china bomb club.

The wife and I were on a week trip and pulled into an RV park for our 1st night. Got up the next morning and did a walk around the 5th wheel. I noticed the right rear tire looked different. The tread wear was basically flat around the tire except for a 1 foot section that was raised. It looked like it had 100+lbs of air in it. It was bulging somewhat and looked really over inflated, while the rest of the tire looked normal. Swapped it out for the spare figuring to save myself a potential blow out. We continued on to our next stop which was about 130 miles. Went to Les Schwab the next morning and had the spare swapped out to the aluminum rim and bought a new spare.
Not sure how long I towed the 5th with the tire like that as I look at them fairly often.
So after all my raving about ST GY Marathons I've become a believer that ST tires are trouble prone. I'll run my tires for the rest of the season which doesn't consist of too much traveling. Then try and figure out how to get some 16" LT tires installed. It's pretty tight between the tires with only about 2.5 " of space.

Tires are 3 year old Goodyear Marathons 225/75/15. Always ran at 65 psi and kept under 65 mph most of the time. I figure I have about 11-12,000 on them. The other 3 look great.

They may be OK for a lighter trailer but they are very trouble prone on a heavier trailer. I had a Carlisle fail on our new to us fifth wheel in April while bringing it home. It had a massive separation and was down to 10 psi; we were very fortunate that we stopped for lunch and I spotted it before it shredded and caused massive damage which I'm sure it would have within a few more miles. I'm running Sailun S637's now and so far they are great. Our trailer weighs about 16k lbs fully loaded.

  • To OP, you dodged a bullet! You should put a plan together for 16" rims and LT tires if you travel a lot. Chris
  • In my opinion, Maxxis are the best ST tire out there. If you are currently running LRD 15's, try moving to a 22575R15 LRE Maxxi. I also recommend having them balanced.
I was I the same boat once and could not find a suitable 15 LT. I went with Maxxis E from China Bomb D and they did well. Ran them for 2 yrs until I sold it. My current rig has 16's so I swapped to LTs before I drove it off the dealers lot.
  • Don't think you'll get LT's in anything less than 16"ers. Had the belts go on 2 of my China bombs over past couple of years. Like the OP, caught one before leaving home and the other 3/4 of way to CG/destination. This year we bought 3 new tires (new one last summer and the new one from 2 years ago is now the spare.
  • I have the same size tires , is there any LT's in that size? I'd rather not go to 16" if possible
  • Good catch and just in time.
Its been my experience with ST tires when one fails like that one did the others are just down the road. Watch the others for those bulges at each stop.

    Foder to ponder.

    The ST225/75-15 D 2540 lbs are approx 28.3" diameter.

LT225/75-16 E 2680 lbs are approx 29.2" diameter which will be approx 1" smaller tire gap from your present 2.5".
