- Pete_kExplorerAlso what truck are you using to pull the camper with? And what brand tires are on the unit? Sounds like there the cheap factory tires. Some of those are the best tire in the world, for blowouts. Camper makers are out to make cash. People want to buy as cheap as they can.So company uses tires that should not be on the unit. But buyer is so happy to save that extra $1000. They could care less, until tires keep blowing out.
Best tires you can buy, will most times take away all the issues with blowouts. We may have one next trip out. But so far 10+ years not a blowout yet. Knock on wood..
Pete - dinwiddiExplorerbama2nz, there still may be some adjustment in the king pin plate. possible to raise the king pin a couple inches, which will lower the trailer. Several of us who have newer model trucks have the trailer riding nose high. The suspension equalizer should equalize the weight fairly well if it isn't too bad off. I do not know if a torque bar suspension will handle the nose high very well.
- MFLNomad IIMost consider 6"s to be the minimum.
Jerry - Bama2nzExplorerTires only had 3,000 miles on them. Put new spare on and 150 miles later, boom. What is proper rail clearance? I'll take the head off the BW in AM and see if it can be lowered. I have put two new Marathon tires on the back axel. Hope they are better than the others.
- bpoundsNomadYeah, so forget the hitch rearward question. That's a dead end.
You've got more than enough bed clearance, so adjust that down a little. Then, I'll bet you've got typical ST tire problems. That's why you had blowouts. The issue was not really being out of level.
As for leveling, were you measuring that 4" at the front and rear? If so, just correcting the hitch will just about take all that out. If the 4" was between front and between tires, that's a larger difference. - MFLNomad IIHaving plenty of bed rail clearance (9 1/2 inches), can't you just lower the hitch? With the head removed on the Companion, you should be able to adjust the arms lower.
Jerry - Bama2nzExplorerThe reason I'm asking is that my 2015 GrandDesign Solitude ST320X with AccuTrack suspension is about 4" to high ( nose high). I have the TrailAir pin box that is I think properly adjusted. When hooked up to my 2014 f350 4 x 4 with 6.5 bed the clearance from bottom of RV to top of bed rail is 9.5". How can I get the RV on all 4 tiers (level ) or at least close to level? I had on last trip two blowouts on left rear both times. I'm very new to 5 wheeling. Now I'm Leery about taking the rig out. I checked the brake and bearing out and I feel they are ok. Soooo with all that said I thought maybe by trailing in slid position it might lower nose, but it didn't . How get to level. Thanks so much for your time
- Pete_kExplorerWhy not just adjust it where the hitch is in the rear position? Mine allows me to move it back 6" or more. When you pull the 5th wheel off the stands. Those stands should allow you to bolt them back more then they are now. And that will remove some weight. But if your overweight on the steering axle. Trying to run with the hitch toward the rear will not be a good ideal.
Sounds like your hitch may have been mounted 2 far forward if your having that issue.
Pete - larry_barnhartExplorerWe followed a large fifth on 93 in Nv. leaving Wells we were behind this fifth and the wind was hitting us from the west. He was having a real problem and the rv and truck were all over the road so I was afraid to pass. when we did it was a flat bed 2500 Ram with the hitch at the very back of the bed. not enough truck and he was probably very tired at the end of his drive.
chevman - MSGTRETIREDCSPExplorerWhen you tow a trailer and all the weight of the trailer is to the rear of the back axle, it changes the handling characteristics of the tow vehicle completely. It's a good way to lose control of the vehicle. It's best to have the weight directly above the axle or 2" in front.
