Cleaning fresh water tank with bleach

Till you no longer smell bleach at the faucets should do it.

Usually a couple of times will do it. But if you had actual mold growing, I'd rinse it twice then add more bleach and repeat the sanitizing process leaving the diluted bleach sit at least 12 hours in the tank and water lines then flush again with clean freshwater..

Odds are if mold was in the tank it is in all the lines and the hot water heater. Drain the hot water heater. Put a mixture of bleach and water in the tank and use it to fill the hotwater heater. Then run the mix through every outlet. Let it sit for a day then run more through. If you do not drink the water you could put a cup or so of NONSCENTED bleach in the tank every time you fill it. It will be dilutued enough that it will not hurt anything but strong enough to keep the mold at bay.

If you smell bleach, add a tablespoon of baking soda in some diluted water. Add it to the system and flush well.

having a little bleach in the system is not an issue if your only washing and cleaning, its chlorine basically so if it smell stronger than a public pool don't use for bathing, if its not as strong as a public pool than its fine for everything but drinking, I always add a cup if its going to sit after a trip for more than a couple weeks, fill the tank a run some out then top it up, not as strong as a public pool but its there.

There are a lot of variables. First of all, as one has said above, if you have mold in the tank, then it was more than likely in other places. Being a certified pool operator, you want to have a high enough chlorine content to kill the mold and other water bound organisms. Chlorine strength varies widely in household products. In this case, I would put the whole gallon of bleach in the tank and fill it. Then pump it through out all of the system. Both hot and cold. Let sit for at least eight hours, then flush until the chlorine smell is gone. Some will say this is overkill, but do a search on water bound illnesses and you can see some of the stuff that can wind up in your water.

Black mold on or in anything should raise some alarms.

A couple of majors are:
Do not use the compromised holding tank as a potable water source.
Let chlorine treated water settle for several hours, overnight is good, 24 hrs is also good.
Multiple treatments is an option.
CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN.... RINSE, RINSE, RINSE
Treat ALL sources, water tank, hot water tank, outside shower, bathroom etc. etc.
To much chlorine can affect your digestive system... so rinse well and rinse again.
Every spring SUPER treat the tank, let the water stand overnight and take trailer for a highway run, reasonable bumpy run is good to swish the mixture around the tank.
PS: you can also take the opportunity to clean your black water tank and the level sensors by adding a mixture of water, ice cubes and baking soda to the holding tank... the travel motion will swoosh the water mixture and ice to clean the sensor probes.
Once treated you should have your water tank source professionally water tested. The cost is worth it.

DO NOT dump a freakin' gallon of undiluted bleach in your system!! That is wayyyy too much and will be a bi*ch to dilute. That's just insane. Do a search and you'll see the approx. formula for bleaching out the hot water system. From memory, it's roughly 1/3 cup of bleach per every 15 gals of fresh water held. That's plenty. You are not trying to shock a freakin' swimming pool.

It's an old argument, but I use Sodium DiChlor to sanitize mine. No harsh smell or taste afterwards.
