Keystone Outback vs Kestone Laredo & Cougar

My understanding is that Cougar, Laredo and Outback are direct competitors of each other within the Keystone Company. Reviews are what they are and sometimes you get mixed feelings due to someone being disgruntled about an item that should have been taken care of by the dealer, manufacture etc. So I have done some checking about filon exterior on the Laredo vs regular fiberglass gelcoat on the outback and some other items. These units are built with similar or the same frames, components etc like chevy and gmc. Keystone, like most other manufactures I am sure will cut some corners like any auto, trailer, home, etc. builder. Just wanted to here some realistic thoughts on any of these lighter weight fifth wheels that anyone has. Honest experiences and circumstances please. Thanks in advance. Jeff
  • For us the weekend camping and once a year 2 week excursion our Cougar 29RES has been flawless in 3+ years and over 12,000 miles traveled. If I was rough on equipment, like many people/kids we see at the campgrounds, any brand would not stand up, but for just us two it is perfect.
  • The current "pecking" order would be Outback on the high end, and Cougar on the low end.
  • as far as I am concerned I wouldn't touch a cougar myself, one of our local dealers offer keystone line.... my friend is our salesmen there, they dropped cougars after an obsene amount of warrenty claims. they kept laredos, montanas, avalaches, copper canyons. He said the Laredo is one step below a Montana, Cougar quality is definatly entry level for fifth wheels and price reflects that. we have a 2013 Laredo which is definatly a step "UP" but I would say just past entry level. We are quite happy with our Laredo, however my next fifth wheel wont be a keystone product, I will likely go to an arctic fox, or grand designs. However in this day and age when it comes to camper quality youll pull your hair out trying to find a quality built unit. Even our Laredo fresh off the lot had plumbing issues I had to fix, and now were having the front cap painted on keystones dime due to it fading.
  • We traded in a 2003 Cedar Creek on a 2012 Laredo, quality of our Laredo is good, but you can tell it is only a mid level unit. We could have gotten a Cougar, but for us the storage compartment on the Laredo was almost twice the size of the Cougar and comparable to the one we had on the Cedar Creek. We only got out twice last fall after getting it and still need to get used to it. The best thing is the level up and I don't think they put them on the current Laredo. Good luck with your search, Chris
  • I'm on my 3rd 5th wheel. My first two were Cougars, and now I'm in a 2014 Grand Design Solitude. To me, the Cougars were entry level 5th wheels.
  • We have Filon on our 2006 Outback. We are very happy with the quality of the unit. A few problems over the years but nothing we could not fix ourselves.
  • I had a 2012 Outback travel trailer and traded it in for a 2015 Cougar 5th wheel. We also looked at the Laredo line. They are similar as you said. We really liked our Outback but when the time came to move to a fifth wheel the Cougar had the floor plan we liked. I would not worry too much about the brand, but instead go for the floor plan you like best.
  • We have an Outback 5th wheel and have had excellent luck with it. I can't say anything negative. If I was buying another today the first I'd look at is another Outback.
  • Not so sure about the 5er, but my Outback TT has been the best trailer I've owned so far. Very happy with it. As far as 5er's, lots and lots of Cougars, but Outbacks are more rare in my part of the country. Outback is making a "come back" though. Laredo is equally good as the other 2. I've seen more Outback TT's than 5er's in my part of the country. But in Florida (just 2 week ago) I saw more Outback 5ers. I think mine was the only Outback TT. So I really think each camper has a regional preference (location) where they are being sold. Probably so the market will stay strong for all 3.

I think basically, it just comes down to which one has the price and floor plan you're looking for. They are so close.
