Negotiating the price on a used 5th wheel

Make them an offer on the one you want at the price you are willing to pay. I recommend using an out-the-door price so they don't do any games at closing (document fees, cleaning fees, delivery fees, etc). Tell them, I'm interested in trailer X and in order for me to buy it, I need the out-the-door total price to be $Y. I have cash to buy immediately. (If you feel you need time to do an inspection of the unit, mention that as well.)

As others have said, they may counter or tell you no and you tell them you have to shop for a unit elsewhere that meets your price range. They will probably try to move you to another trailer they have that is lower price, etc. Just repeat yourself, I can afford $Y out-the-door for trailer X. Tell them to call you if they change their mind.

Most of the time, the sales people don't want you to leave the lot. They know statistically if you leave, the chances of you buying from them is low.

With every rig we have purchased here in WA state we have had little luck negotiating a lower price than tagged on a used coach. In our experience, dealers are not willing to deal on used inventory. We ended up purchasing from a private party which worked out very well.

Patience, and showing him you're willing to walk away are your two best negotiating tools. Give him an offer on the one you want that is what you can afford, but not ridiculously low for that model. They WILL say no, and counter offer. Give them another offer just a little higher. They'll say no again. That's when you leave. They'll try to stop you, but LEAVE! Give them your phone number and tell them you're going to look around. Then do just that. Who knows, you may find another that is just what you want. In the mean time, the original dealer will be calling you. Ask them if they'll accept your price. No? Sorry, still looking. They may give in for a sale, and you (hopefully) get a deal. If not, believe me, they are out there if you have the time to keep looking. Good luck.

Is the dealer aware how much you like the 2 units that he has? Good reason for him to hold his price.

Do you have the money ready to go & truck ready to tow? Good bargaining chip for you.

Are you in a hurry to buy? Yes? Good for the dealer. No? Good for you.

Any issues with the unit? Yes? Good for you. No? Good for the dealer.

Are you in the habit of trading units after only a few years?

OK, go to another nearby dealership and find one that is close to what you're looking for. Use that one to bargain with. At least it would be more believable and possibly true. Showing the salesperson that you're ready to walk away from his deal will be the best negotiation tool you could have. When he says that he will discuss this with his sales manager could be an indication he will likely drop the price.

Also what is the price of these rigs. If they are 1000 or 2000 dollars probably not much room. If they are 15k and 25k probably quite a bit of room. Of course we are coming into spring so that's on there side.

How far away are you from meeting the price of the more expensive unit?
How big of a hurry are you in to make a purchase?
