Trailer not charging batteries with shoreline.

5th wheel Trailer - HR Savoy LX - 2008 - New problem this summer. Trailer not charging batteries with shoreline. Batteries charge while on the road connected to truck. Doesn't happen at every RV park. One RV tech suggested a bad ground might keep the inverter from charging. Any suggestions?

Batteries: two 6 volt HD purchased last Dec.
  • To answer my own question, I talked to my AV tech back home. The converter is a part of the fuse/breaker panel just inside the front door. I pulled and visually checked all the fuses and they appear good. I have totally disconnected the two 6 vt. batteries and connected a 12 vt. deep cycle, so I'm good til I get home. (WA and OR coasts are beautiful.)
  • Locate your breaker/fuse box and you're likely to find the converter nearby. It may be behind that, but regardless you should check all the breakers and check for the reset button as another poster mentioned.

I noticed that my charger only charged my 12 volt battery to 67%, but once I had my converter replaced (lightening damage) it fully charged while plugged in. Not sure why that was the case, but maybe I didn't charge it enough even though I put it on for at least 3.5 hours.
  • Thanks to all who have made suggestions. Does anyone know where the converter is located on a Savoy LX?

Question #2: When I charge my two 6 volt batteries with my charger, they only charge to 68%. BTW, the batteries were purchased in April of this year.
  • Not sure if you have found your problem, but check your convertor, there is usually a reset button if for some reason it got overloaded. Do the reset and check voltages starting at the convertor. If the two large 6 volt batteries got really discharged and you plugged into shore power it could have triggered the reset? Good Luck!

And wired in series, it is one BIG 12v battery.
  • You have a "converter", not an inverter.

As you indicated, "always" charges connected to TV, "occasionally" doesn't charge on shore power. Check battery connections at the converter, first.
  • If it is charging by the tow vehicle, something in the electrical is probably out of wack. Check all the fuses, switches and converter / charger to insure you are getting power to the batteries. Check all the wiring to the batteries as well. Good Luck& Be Safe ! ! !
