2012 Thor Hurricane

Hello all,

We are looking to make the change from a 5th wheel toy hauler to a Class A 2012 Thor Hurricane. We like it because of the bunk bed set up and hope to look at it this weekend. Are there any Thor Hurricane owners who can provide some pro's and con's on this unit? I believe it has the Ford Triton V10 and while I had a van with this motor, I want to ensure it can tow an 18 ft enclosed trailer. Any thoughts, comments or what to look out for would be appreciated. Thank you.
  • yeah, it will pull the trailer but what are you putting in the trailer?????

The V10 is not the problem. Motorhomes get the 365hp version and that is plenty to tow with. There are many other issues that affect your towing and based on what another posted as GCVWR and Thor's tow rating on a random 2012 hurricane model I looked up on the internet, it looks like Thor says you can tow about 4k up to 5k depending on how heavy you load the coach itself. The 5k upper limit may just be the class III hitch or it may have to do with the frame or other components of the driveline.

PLEASE do look at and ask about others' experiences with Thor as mentioned above at the Thor owners' forum at irv2.com. Quality control seems to be very hit or miss. Hopefully with a 2012 most issues will have been sorted out. The other possibility with a 2012 is that someone decided to cut their losses with a lemon.

I used to tow a 20ft enclosed trailer with my F-250 (V-10), it was probably 2k lbs empty :h

So, if your enclosed trailer is less 5k lbs LOADED, you will be fine due to the stock CLASS III hitch. My TOAD (see sig) is around the 5k range, I have to keep looking in the backup camera monitor to make sure it's still there.:E

    Good luck with your decision.

This is dangerous information. Just because the hitch is rated at 5k# does not mean you can tow 5k#. It depends on the various weights included in the capacity. Some have a very slim margain when it's all said and done. You need to do the math to figure what you can tow safely.

    dangerous information :h
It was my opinion about the V-10 :E

The stock CLASS III hitch is rated for 5K, so if he is UNDER the GCWR he'll be fine and legal when properly equipped (to tow 5k). So yes, math is involved as well as knowing the weight of the trailer empty versus loaded and the loaded coach. :R

However, I think the Hurricane 34T (bunkbed model) GCWR is 26k and GVWR is 22K, so that leaves 4K (for towing) assuming the coach is at or below 22k loaded.

  • I have a 2011 Hurricane 34T with the bunks. We have put over 30,000 miles on it already, over 90 camping days last year and are very happy with it. We almost always take our 3 year old granddaughter with us and she loves the bunk bed. We have had very few problems with it and had originally planned on getting a new one next year and now we're thinking keep it a few more years instead. We tow a Jeep Unlimited which weighs 4500 pounds. Tows it with no problems. Based on the various forums any rig can have problems and maybe luck plays a part, In any event - good luck with your decision. If you have any specific questions or concerns feel free to send me a private message,

Go to www.IRV2.com and go to the Thor forum. You can ask any question to people that own units like you are inquiring about. Good luck with your search.
  • Some Hurricane class A's have had problems in the past with the front windshields popping out. Maybe others will have more particulars on that. The towing capacity of your hitch will most likely be #3500-5000 which will probably put the total weight capacity of the mh in the #2300-2500 range. Posting the model # of your rig would help a lot.
  • Ditto what effy said about gas towing capacity. We've been looking at similar gas MHs and took a liking to the Georgetown BH model. Seemed to is the interior trim and layout of the bunks were nicer than the Thor, but that might be a matter of personal taste. Here's a video of a model similar to the one we looked at. Pretty sure it has the triton V-10

I don't think the v-10 will be the issue. The real question comes in with the towing capacity of the MH itself. You didn't indicate a model number but I would figure out the weight vs capacity and the weight of your trailer. At MOST you can only get 5k# on a gasser hitch. Subtract the carrying weight and you will be well short of that. It's going to be different for every MH.
