Adding Oil

Hello Everyone.

Your forum is a great resource and I thank you in advance for all the great info.

I purchased a used Beaver 2002 with the cat 330 engine. So far all is going fine, but how do you add oil to the engine?

I've been watching it like a hawk, so I thought I should investigate what to do to add oil.

I looked everywhere, and the only fill port is under the rear motor cover on the outside of the coach. BUT,,,there is no way to get a funnel in there and pour in the oil. I notice the tranny and radiator fills are also obstructed by the rear body panel. The door opens fine, but all the fill ports are up high under the rear cap,(not moveable).

Do I have to take the oil in the coach and add it under the bed?

Thanks
  • Go the hardware store and buy a piece of clear plastic hose about 1 inch in diameter and 12-18 inches long. Use that piece to go into the oil filler, the other end of the hose can be attached to a funnel in which you pour your oil. It does require a method of holding the hose, funnel, and then pouring, but you will figure it out. On my rig I have to to exactly as described.

X2, there is someone there with a coach like yours and an answer for any question you could ask.

  • Some of those "J" shaped oil fill extensions extend/pull out.

I always removed them and installed a Caterpillar oil fill plug on the valve cover. Lots less chance of dirt getting into the engine.

Now, if it takes an hour to access the under-bed area/valve cover, I would probably rethink what I did.

BTW, be sure to CALIBRATE THE ENGINE OIL DIPSTICK. Caterpillar did not spec or install the dip stick, and it could be off.

Call the Caterpillar RV Hotline with your engine serial number to determine the correct quantity (both ADD and FULL) and calibrate the dip stick at the next oil change. Calibration is free and only takes a few more minutes than a standard oil change.
