Awning leg repair?

The screws at the bottom of one of my awning legs are stripped. I tried a little larger screws and they stripped easily as well. I had thought about using toggle bolts but it looks like my black water holding tank is right behind where the screws are and I dont want to take a chance on punturing it. Anyone have experience with this situation or possible solutions?

not sure what you have going on, but when I began to have that problem, it was actually an indication of some water intrusion. screws were wicking water into wood behind the aluminum. I did something similar to the bear and F1bNorm and put a strip of wood on the underside and then bolts. provided the strength needed to hold arms steady.

You are propably right about some water intrusion as the mount is right about floor level of the toilet and I see some evidence of a toilet leak at one time. I'm going to try several of the ideas here and see it I can possibly get a piece of wood on the inside. Thanks all for the help.

  • Similar problem, but there was enough space to slip in a 1/2" ply backing board with two tee nuts. Used SS bolts cut flush with tee nut. Check your other attachments. Mine had a couple of others with sheet metal screws in just the camper skin. Not good!

  • You might look into Thread Serts by Marson. They are blind rivets with built in threads. Would need the kit probably. I have the 39214 kit with assortment serts and tools. Can be used on fiberglass, plastic, etc., any hard material.
  • I fought this for a few years until even longer and bigger screws wouldn't hold.

I finally had to add a 1/4 inch thick steel plate that is about 4 inches longer than the awning mount. This allowed me to use 4 screws to mount the plate to the side of the RV and then screw the awning mounting plate in to the new steel plate. I painted the plate the same color as the RV so it blends in. This has held for 4 years.
