Awning shock absorber

When I extend my awning (Winnebago) one of the two shocks (1-shock per arm) makes a little pop like the rod is sticking inside the shock. Is there any lubricant that I can use that won't hurt the shock when it's retracted. I want to check in with the RV.Net community before I put a light grease or silicone spray on the shock. I just want to do the right thing!
