blowinf fuse on tow vehicle

Thanks for the update on what cured the problem.

OH, the pigtail wire, doh, I just tightened the connector on mine as a preventative. If I don't get after it from time to time it tends to loosen and cause problems. Usually it has manifested in lights not working on the tow'd. Once it took out the light circuit on the coach, not good.

Not sure why I did't think of that as the problem.

All, I took it to a shop today. Yep, bad connection. The jeep side of the fat blue connector wire had some loose connections that shorted out if the conditions were just right. So, the technition tightened everything and I'm good to go. Just took an hour and 80 bucks Canadian. Thanks for all the comments.

Sounds to me like you have a bad connection and when jiggled it loses contact and makes an arc which can blow a fuse. Check your connectors.

Sounds like it is the battery charge fuse..

The Blue Ox tow system uses inertial sensors in the box which are bothered by rough roads.. I really hate box in the drivrs seat brake systems.

It eats electricity as well

It may be that the amount eaten is enough to pop the fuse.. I can not recommend a larger fuse but you might try a circuit breaker.. One of the kind that auto resets.. IF possible monitor current on that lead while towing.

Has that fuse always blown from the day it was installed or did it work for quite a while?

Is 15 amps big enough to supply what is needed?

Who made the determination that a 15 amp fuse should be used?

If your supply line is trying to keep the battery charged there could be problems of this nature.

Thanks to everyone for quick replies. The fuse is the "inline" one which was added to make the jeep tow ready. It is outside the box of fuses.

I also have a Blue Ox brake system in the jeep. It frequently shows an errer code when I go over rough roads but then goes back to normal. I have it set on level 3. Currently I am driving on level roads so the brake is not getting a workout.

I tow a 2011 Jeep Wrangler (Rubicon) behind my coach with UTB which I believe you mentioned in another thread. I would be happy to go out and look at mine for anything specific you might want to know. We are in camp right now so it is sitting 20 feet from where I am sitting.

If you have a toad brake please tell us what it is.

Yeah, it would be nice if you could tell us "which" fuse. And just so we're on the same page, a "tow" vehicle is one that is doing the towing...such as your motor home. A vehicle being towed behind the motor home is a "towed" vehicle, commonly called a toad.

Provide us with a little more info and I'm sure someone will be able to help you.
