Class c levelers

a friend of mine told me not to extend my motor home levers down all the way because it could bend them. Instead but a 4in block under them so the levers won’t extend all the way. This would be important in soft sand were you need better footing. My friend had to replace on shaft because it bent! Please advice. Thank you
  • We put a bag of lego blocks under the rear stabilizers, just because we don't have to manually screw them down as much. ;-)
But I can understand how the stabilizer would be weaker if it was fully extended. But I don't know for sure.

  • One of the concerns you should have to avoid any problems is not lift the rear of the RV too much without blocking the wheels. The only brakes you have while parked is on the rear. Depending on the level of your site pad, If you lift too much weight off the rear, the RV could move causing a possible bend to your levelers.
You should use some sort of pad under the levelers on soft or graves sites. A lot of people use lego blocks. I use a 2x12x12 pad.
  • Out of curiosity, is this discussion about LEVELERS or STABILIZERS?
  • I have Big Foot levelers on my Class C motorhome and love them. But it is possible to bend the pistons. I happened to me when I tried to jack up the side of the motorhome to work on one of the rear mud guards. Jacking the left front and left rear jacks to their highest positions caused the rear jack piston to bend which necessitated it's replacement at a cost of about $450. a painful lesson in "what not to do". I could have accomplished the same thing by extending both rear jacks to their maximum position and I'm quite sure that no damage would have resulted from that maneuver.

In any case, to respond to the OP, using blocks of some kind under the jacks would have likely prevented the piston from bending as I would not have needed to extend it so far to get the clearance I needed to work under the rear of the motorhome.

I cringed when I read your post, hopefully you did not go anywhere underneath your rig with just the levelers holding it up.
I have used my hydraulics to lift the rig but ALWAYS used a block of wood as a safety device. I purchased end cuts of large beams at the lumber yard just for that purpose. Be safe out there.
  • I will never get under ANY vehicle {truck, car, trailer or motorhome} without it being supported by adequate jackstands. Jacks can fail or slip when you least expect it. Block your wheels, jack it up and install the jackstands. It only takes a couple of minutes to do it right.
