Diesel fuel filter priming pump

With a Caterpillar manual primer pump on the secondary fuel filter, there is no reason to pre-fill the secondary fuel filter. Even "clean fuel" can have contaminants that can damage fuel system parts.

Install dry. Yes, leaving the filter a little loose until fuel comes out speeds the priming process, but is not necessary.

Just pump until it goes from easy to pump to hard. You are done.

Hoosier cruiser has right idea. Also when I fill my 2ndary to speed priming up I leave the filter a turn or two loose, when fuel starts to seep out I clean up, tighten. Prime til firm.

It's very, very important you keep everything clean. Clean filter, housing b4 removal, and don't introduce anything into the system. You can kill a heui pump or injector with sloppy filter changing.

I added the CAT priming pump to my C-7. First I replace the primary fuel filter/water separator and then pump until hard to pump. Start engine. Second replace secondary fuel filter (CAT 2 micron) and then pump until hard and start engine. No problems.

Without knowing what eng you have, there's no way to answer. Modern HPCR systems can be put together dry and they will self-prime.
Anything older will be different.
