Extended Warranty --- Drivetrain Only?

Hi All,

We have now had our 2003 Executive for 2 years and our XtraRide Platinum EW is about to expire. I am comfortable enough with the coach, after 2 years, to have decided that I don't want to spend the kind of money that the current policy costs.

I do, however, want to protect myself from a catastrophic failure, if the policy cost is reasonable. So..... Has anyone purchased an EW that covers DriveTrain Only? If so, some details would be most welcomed!

PLEASE don't bother responding of your only advice is to NOT buy an EW. It's my decision to make, my money to spend and I'm looking for help from others who have done it.

Thanks All!
Paul C
  • Have you read the fine print on your existing policy? I know that as the vehicle gets older, more and more things ARE NOT covered. Some policies drop coverage on seals and gaskets after a certain number of years, as well as other things. On a ten year old coach, you may only be able to get partial coverage compared to a newer coach, and the drive train coverage may be very limited.
  • You may want to try Cornerstone. They are based in Hickory, NC and I believe when we recently purchased a coach-only (no chassis stuff) EW from them, they had a variety of options including chassis only.

My thinking was based on the feeling that the coach stuff (slides, genset, electronics, appliances, etc.) were more likely to fail than a properly maintained DP drive train. In fact, I have a service appointment to address a failing inverter and, if it has to be replaced, the replacement cost and labor will likely approach 2/3 of what I paid for the warranty (assuming they cover it).
  • You might want to give Good Sam Extended Service Plan a try. While we don't have a drive train only option, we have two different plans and four different deductible options ranging up to $1,000 deductible, which will cover the big stuff only at a substantial discount.

We are also the only plan out there that will allow you to keep the coverage as long as you want or until your rig is 18 model years old or reaches 150,000 miles, while paying monthly.

  • Thanks! I did send them a quote request this morning.

    Happy Trails.

  • Yes Scott... I'm well aware of the fact that the odds are I will not recoup the cost of the coverage in repairs. I am also aware that I don't ever want to deal with a 5 figure catastrophic engine of transmission failure. So......... My original request stands that I would like to hear from anyone who already may have purchased a drive-train only coverage plan and how they have fared with it.

If the cost is crazy prohibitive, I will re-think getting one. But I still need to gather information........
  • PC,
Well Sir, you know as well as the rest of us that purchasing any EW is a gamble. Now don't get your potatoes over fried here. This is just something to think about. Folks have been purchasing EW packages for decades and some have been fortunate that they did because they needed it if and when a time came and something broke. But, there's also the ones that purchased it and it didn't cover squat because of the fine print.

There are stories and stories of how something broke, on or in an engine, or transmission etc. and cause extensive damage to other parts of the said engine or transmission. But, the warranty ONLY covered the broken part, not all the extensive damage to the rest of the components.

So, yes, it's most certainly your money and you have the right to spend it any way you choose. So, all you have to do is determine if, THE PRICE IS REASONABLE as you put it, to purchase just a drive train EW. But, just make sure you read all the micro-fine print and/or, call the company and discuss things like, if this breaks and causes damage to this, that, or other things, or all the above, will you pay for the damage to all the surrounding components of the item that broke. Or, another way of asking the same question to them, if this breaks, WHAT WON'T YOU PAY FOR? Then you can make an informed decision as to whether the price is "REASONABLE" for what you'd be getting in coverage. Just a thought here.
    Scott
  • I did send out some quote requests earlier today and am waiting to hear back. I'm just looking for some feedback from anyone in here who may have already taken the same strategy........

    Thanks!
