Florida to Michigan

Planning a trip from SE Michigan to Naples, FL starting in Mid-December. Have the southbound leg planned but need some suggestions on places to stop and things to see and do on the way back. We will be heading back to Michigan the second week in January and will have 10 days to 2 weeks to travel. Any ideas.
  • Take I 275 around Cincinnati (west). Avoid going through Cincy, major construction and narrow lanes.
  • We do the trip from Michigan (leave Christmas Eve) to Florida every year. We love to go to Nashville on the way down to see the Gaylord, opryland and oprymills….FABULOUS decorations and very festive. 3 campgrounds on Music Valley Drive….yogi bear, two rivers and KOA. We choose the KOA (premium patio site only) because it is concrete with a patio and very level. The others (we've stayed at them all) have a tendency to flood much worse than the KOA. It would be easy to spend 5 days in Nashville going between the downtown clubs, sites, restaurants, act….The General Lee is a great dinner cruise but I don't know if it is open at that time of year.

We've also done the I-75 straight shot thru Chattanooga…..great aquarium, rock city, lookout mountain and other things. Holiday Travel Park is OK but again if it rains it floods something terrible.

Last year we shot from North Florida to Hilton Head Island….great bike trails, restaurants, beaches. Then we went west to Georgia and up to Nashville…..took 2 weeks to get home and a bunch of fun on the way. This year….well I don't plan on heading North till late May or later till the snow and cold are behind us in Michigan
  • Thanks to all for the suggestions. They give me a good place to start my planning.

Dick B- I agree with your question 100%, unfortunately my wife has to be back for work the last week of January. Maybe I should stay in Florida and play golf while she works.
  • I like to take I-95 to I-26 and I-77 up to West Virginia then over through Columbus Ohio and back to I-75. Google Maps will pick that route if you start along I-95 in Florida. Same mileage, nice drive through the mountains. Of course, in January, that can mean snow. Coming up through Nashville avoids the mountains, but is a few miles further.

Watch the weather, pick a route, then find some stops.
  • My only suggestion would be to check with any campgrounds you decide to stay in to see if they are open that time of year! A lot of campgrounds from KY North are closed that time of year! Enjoy your Fl time and stay safe in your travels! Steve
  • Not sure why you would want to return to Michigan in January but you can do a Google search for `______ tourism' and put the city/state/region in the blank for the experts suggestions on what to see/do in their area.
  • you could go up through Chattanooga: Holiday TravL Park is where we stayed.
Nashville (Two Rivers campground) and into KY:
Mammoth Cave KY. We stayed at Cave Country RV Park in Cave City.
Corvette Plant and museum in Bowling Green KY.
Land Between the Lakes KY area is nice.
Outside Cincinnati we stayed at Winton Woods County Park. Very nice.
  • Ever been to Ohio Amish country. Sugar Creek, Berlin etc. Also has a Swiss, German influence. If interested PM me and I will give you things to do and see in the area
  • Richard,
If you go back via I-75 stop over in Atlanta and stay at Stone Mtn. Campground, drive toad into Atlanta and visit Aquarium, CocaCola, CNN (all within walking distant), Fernbank museum is also close by the Aquarium area and worth a couple of hours.

From Atlanta head through Knoxville and go to Lexington, KY and stay at the Kentucky Horse Park Campground. Drive over to Keenland Racetrack and wander around for a couple of hours, might even get to see some auctions. Also, make a visit to Rupp Arena and look for the "rocking chair".

From Lexington head westerly to Louisville and then north to Indianapolis, Kalamazoo, South Bend and home.

Plenty to do an see in KY. Google the "bourbon trail" in Ky and see if you might like a nice day trip.

Edit: misread SE Michigan and I was thinking SW Michigan. We visit friends in Watervliet. Guess you could skip the Louisville to Indianapolis route.
