I have done it both ways. Pre-fill and you will have no problems. The last time I did not have fuel available to pre-fill so I did the key cycle. I cycled it three times and it started right up then died. Cycled it a couple more times and it started after cranking for about 45 seconds. It ran fine after that. Like I said, pre-fill if you can. Years ago when I drove a semi we pre-filled with transmission fluid. That's what the boss told us to do and it seemed to work fine.
