KingDome Removal from 2007 Allegro

I have a KIngDome 9530-LP-B that I understand is obsolete and was considering removing it. I recently acquired the motorhome and it was already disconnected on the inside. There is some evidence of headliner delamination in that area on the inside. There is a lot of sealant over the four bolts and the considerable area where the wires go in the roof.

It is a fiberglass roof and I am experienced with fiberglass work on boats and have those materials. What puzzles me is that the bolts appear to be studs coming up from below. This cannot be as it would not be accessible from below. I have the install manual, but it is not specific and shows no diagrams or pictures of the feet. What I want all of you to say is: "No, the stud is simply part of the KingDome footpad that is screwed into the roof from above with screws that you cannot see because of all the sealant"

thanks for any ideas,
fred
  • Some folks, including manufacturers, set the mounting plates on the roof with no caulking underneath, screwed the dome to the plates and then covered the exposed plates with caulk. This installation leaks! Water can still get under the plate from the inside uncaulked portion of the mounting plates. You will know more once you get the caulk off the screws and remove the nuts so you can lift the dome off. If you see caulk on only the outside edges of the mounting plate and it appears there is nothing under the plate then you need to remove everything down to the roof, clean it up and squeeze some caulk into the screw holes in the roof, screw the screws back into the holes and then caulk over the screws to ensure you seal things up properly.

    Thanks Jim!

You are very welcome. Hope it goes well.

You can take the dome off and leave the goo until you're in a warm place to scrape it off so you can access the screws. Unless you have a hair drier...helps to soften the goo. I use a plastic scraper for that kind of stuff. Isn't a fun job getting it off though.
  • Yep, each corner has two screws that fasten it to the roof. Undo the 4 bolts, lift it off, and then remove the screws.
  • Here's the installation videos for the King brand. Yours was probably installed by the PO so they may have followed these videos: King Connect Installation Videos

I've watched the video a bit and those bolts are what hold the feet (footpads) to the Dome. Than the feet are bolted or screwed into the roof. So you're good.

BTW, I wouldn't bother with fiber repair kits, I'd just cover the holes with Eternabond tape. Might only need 2" width and that's available at most Home Depot stores in 25' rolls.
