Need Help and Experience (Update)

I have an 2008 Monaco Dynasty motorhome..... the cruise control and the windshield wipers have stopped working. I have checked all of the fuses and everything I know how to check. Everything looks ok. I have a sinking feeling that the problem may be in the "smartwheel" (steering wheel). My question is has anyone out there experienced this problem? If so, I would appreciate your feedback.

Thanks.

Becker, it's your post so you can edit it. Go to your original post and click, EDIT. That will bring up the original post with the HEADING. Add (UPDATE) to the end of the heading. That will give everyone a heads up that you've solved the problem....glad it's working...Dennis
  • Lube the heck out of your wiper blade arms under the hood. Mine was doing what yours did because the wiper blade arms were causing a large draw on the circuit breaker and tripping it. Everything always worked once I shut the coach off and restarted it.
  • This is an update to my original post.....

Today I went to my storage facility to get my coach, to bring it home so I could better work on it. When I got out on the highway I, just for kicks, I hit the Cruise Control..... and lo and behold it worked. With this under my belt I hit the windshield wipers..... and lo and behold they worked. I played around with both switches on the way home and they both worked normally...... go figure and a big question mark.

I can offer no explanation with the exception that the SmartWheel Control System may have somehow rebooted itself from the "SmartWheel Steering Wheel Control System. (I'm guessing and grasping here.)

What I am worried about is that if it happened once, it can happen again (when it's raining "cats n dogs"). I may go ahead and pull the SmartWheel apart and spray the boards down with a contact cleaner (as Dennis suggested).

If anyone has any other suggestions, please jump in..... and thanks for all of your previous input.

I hope this update gets put back on top of this blog.

  • Mr.Mark......I qualified my post by stating that Monaco's do, (so I wouldn't be attacked by those who don't) since the owner has a Monaco, but my new Freightliner does the same thing. It turns on my lights. Actually had rain the other day north of Monterey. It blew the wiper nut cover off of my TruVision wipers.
  • DSDP Don, I did not know that about the windshield wipers on Monaco's. Thanks. Being mostly in California, like you, we didn't use our wipers very much. We usually never traveled in the rain unless we just ran into it.

I think in all the years with the Dynasty, I replaced the wiper blades 3 times (just buying new ones before consignment).

    Safe travels,
    MM. :B
  • Reply to question.....
    1) Started out on an 800 miles trip.... got out on the highway and hit the cruise control switch.... no cruise control.
    2) On same trip we went through a thunder storm.... turned on the windshield wipers..... no windshield wipers (if it wasn't for the Rain-X that I put on the windshield some time back, I would have been in serious trouble).
    3) I checked the labeled fuses (located in the fuse compartment just below the drivers side window) and all checked good.

I will open up the "smartwheel" and spray the modules with contact cleaner to see if that works (very nervous about doing this).

Thanks for your input..... will let you know how it turns out..... will have to go out to the storage facility so it may be a week or so.
  • Good info from Dennis.....here is their troubleshooting info..SmartWheel

If you don't know, when you turn on your wipers, (on your Monaco) the SmartWheel automatically turns on your headlights and they stay on until the coach is shut down.

Since I rarely used mine in California, the wiper arms got dry and dirty. The time I needed them, they would come on for a moment and quit. I determined that turning them on, which automatically turned all the coach lights, was drawing too much power, tripping the system's circuit breaker. Once I shut off the coach it would reset. My cure was to lube the heck out of the wiper blade arms under the front hood. I never had the problem again.

I mention all of this, because your lights and wipers are directly related. There may be a bad circuit breaker you're looking for.
  • If you think it's the SmartWheel, get some contact cleaner. Comes in a spray can, Home Depot/Lowes/Radio Shack. There are eight small screws that you remove from underneath the steering wheel. The modules come off in three pieces. Spray them liberally and reinstall. Easy fix. The contacts get dirty and won't work properly. If you do need to replace any of it, you'll only have to replace that one module.

Now, tell us more about what happened. From your statement, it sounds like you were headed down the road in the rain with your cruise control and wipers on and they both just quit. Is that correct? Or did one quit and then the other? They are not on the same fuse. Open the outside door below the driver's seat. Look up on the INSIDE of that door. Monaco lists the location and more info about where your 'hidden' fuses are located....

You do know you have three fuse panels, yes?......Dennis

One other thing...use a meter to check the fuses. Eyeballing them is not the best way to do it...D
