peeling decals on my Tiffin Allegro Bus

Couple of items; I wanted to thank everyone who offered advice on my other topic about the Allison 3000...
So here is another one.
The decals and striping are peeling off of my motor home due to being out in the Texas sun for so long. The body is fiberglass that is in perfect shape and I plan on using a paint remover to strip them off and then buff the fiberglass smooth.
What I am trying to do is save thousands of dollars even thou I will need a professional to apply new decal and stripes...
So here are my questions.
Has anyone out there done this?
What kind of stripper/paint remover should I use that won't harm the fiberglass?
What king of solvent should I use for any residue from the stripper?
Last but not least, where and who would be a good source to apply decals and stripes? The fiberglass is white. I'm in Fort Worth, Texas.
Thanks,
  • Call Tiffin Parts and have your VIN number ready. They can tell you what decals go with your year and model and whether or not they have them in stock. Depending on the year of your coach, they may have them. BTW, they went to full body paint somewhere in the early 2000s and if your coach is pre-2000 you may be out of luck.

If you liked the look of the stripes, any good paint shop can duplicate the look in paint - and they won't peal off.
  • If I was going to go to the trouble of removing the decals, I sure as heck wouldn't put decals back on it. Mine are also starting to fade but I've got indoor storage now so that has stopped the decay. But if I did take them off I'd either just leave the motorhome all white, or have it painted.

I have a question. Does the eraser wheel generate heat on the fiberglass while stripping decal?

    Yes.

I used both styles of eraser wheels when I took off my stripes and found the one made by 3M worked best.

Once you have the stripes removed, you will have an outline of the stripes that may or may not be removed with a buffer.

I used the outline as a template for my new stripes then painted on stripes using automotive paint.

It was a long, tedious project but turned out nice in the end.
  • I have a question. Does the eraser wheel generate heat on the fiberglass while stripping decal?
  • My first Allegro had a large "Roughing it Smoothly" which DW didn't like, so I used a heat gun for removal. Then liquid dish soap removed the residue.
  • I did the same as BB_TX. Started with a heat gun and mineral spirits. It worked but was a lot of efforts. Used the eraser wheel next and was finished in no time. I painted rather than having to rework decals again if I keep the coach long enough.
  • I just replaced the front and rear decals on my 5er last year. Heat gun and plastic scraper at first. Some came off without tooooo much trouble. Others very difficult. Especially those with lots of spider web cracks. Gave up and bought a 3M eraser wheel to use in my drill. That was easier. Not easy, but easier. One advantage of the eraser wheel was that a lot of the adhesive balled up with the decal pieces and flaked off while erasing. That left somewhat less adhesive remaining on the surface. But it does take a good drill as it really works it.

In both cases the remaining adhesive was removed using 3M Adhesive Remover. That took a lot of remover and a lot of rubbing.
  • It would seem that if Tiffin lives up to its reputation of standing behind their product, they should have those decals available.

Whether or not they provide them at no charge is maybe a dream.

Regarding removing the old decals, like what was mentioned, it can
be done, but there is no "easy" way to do it. Probably a gentle heat gun to soften the adhesive and a plastic putty knife. I have heard that Goo-Gone removes the residual adhesive. I have used Crud Cutter as well. Both are available at Home Depot.
  • Any sign shop can make new decals for your rigg. These are same vendors that do vehicle wraps on buses and commercial rigs.
As for removing existing decals you might try a hair dryer

    Thanks,

I had this issue on my 5th wheel and was continuously peeling the decals off. I only peeled those that were coming up.

There are plenty of threads about this on different forums and even youtube videos explaining how to do it. I don't know if I'd use paint stripper although I've seen a youtube video using that method too.
