Rear Window Leak Just Found

Ok so we had a melt today and I went to check on the RV and just ensure everything was copacetic inside and no critters had moved in. For some reason I check the rear bunk and found it was wet. Looks like water is coming in from the lower portion of the rear window.

I don't have any softness and the walls feels solid. RV is a 93 Tioga Montara that was gutted and restored upon being imported to Canada from AZ about 9years ago. Windows are the sliding kind.

I'm going to check the weep holes which I just learned about. If it is not something simple like that and I need to replace window (in spring) what can I do to mitigate any damage while it sleeps the winter away. I have it covered with an ADCO cover right now.

  • I discovered that if the angle is just "wrong", the weep hole can't keep up with the rate at which the channel will fill because of water pouring off the end of the awning.

I opened up the weep hole space to keep up with even a heavy flow of water and will also make something to divert water streaming off the awning.

  • There is a least one You Tube video about cleaning out weep holes in sliding window channels. You Tube has many informative RV how-to videos.
  • If it is covered with an Addco cover then water shouldn't be leaking in.They are designed to keep water out. Is your cover ripped?
I am thinking it could be condensation on the window and it overflowed the window track. I have an Addco cover on our trailer and keep the bathroom vent open, with a Maxxair cover over the vent. It helps to release the condensation.
Hope it is something as simple as this, and not a leaky window or light.

  • I'm not sure about suggestions for mitigating the leak during the winter while you wait, but we did a removal and replacement (same window, just cleaned it up and re-seated it) of our rear window last spring. Before removing it we tried recaulking it around the edge and that seemed to help, but it still leaked. Here's a link to our blog detailing what we did: Rear Window

HOWEVER, ultimately we think that the rear cyclops might have been our biggest culprit. Shortly after the window replacement (before the next hard rain) one of our bulbs burned out and in taking it off we realized it was all moldy and corroded in there, and that it wasn't sealed well at all. It sure seemed like a big leak point. So we replaced that as well. We are bone dry now, so we're not 100% sure which one it was, or perhaps a combination of the two.
