Securing new microwave oven

I just replaced the microwave/ convection oven in our '99 DSDP.
Newmar had, in addition to the standard four bolts, shot in four long sheet metal screws through the shelf above the oven down into the sheet metal top of the oven.
I had speculated that they had done this because they made the holes in the shelf so large trying to find the mounting holes in the top of the microwave that the large washers under the bolt heads were in danger of being displaced and falling through these holes, leaving only the two bottom angle bolts holding the 71 pound unit to its bracket.
I cut out two 2.5" squares of 1/8", 5 ply aircraft plywood to cover the holes in the shelf, and drilled bolt-sized holes through these, so now the large washers under the bolt heads are resting on solid wood.
My question is: should it be necessary to shoot in the additional sheet metal screws into the top of the oven, or is it adequately secured as I have described?

    That's right.
By "Shot" I meant the same as "driven". I assume that just about everyone uses a powered device to run these screws in.
Thanks to all for the assurance about the security of the mounting.
And as far as the strength of the shelf above the unit, if it wasn't strong enough to support its share of the weight, then shooting screws down through it wouldn't make it any stronger.
The previous installation lasted 15 years. If we are on the road that much longer, I'll be DELIGHTED! :-)

  • You are good to go, I have three bolts with large washers holding mine which replaced the two original ones. I have already driven the rig around mountain cures and up and down same with no issues other than I need to figure out how to keep the bottom panel from squeaking..a lot.
