Starting over

My wife and I camped for years in travel trailers. We quit in 04 when my son was diagnosed. We are wanting to start over. This time we want a class c. I found an 09 Tioga Ranger 25g. It appears to be in good shape . I have only seen craigslist pics so far. It belongs to a retired couple who purchased it new. The unit only has 7850 miles on it. The low miles is a major concern for me. The unit has all the options I want including custom paint. They are asking 42,000 for the unit. They seem to be willing to drop a little. The asking price is the loan payoff so who knows. I need any and all advice on this possible purchase, so fire away. Thanks for any advice.
  • Well I guess the deal is off. The seller called me yesterday. The payoff is 43K. I told her I would go 36. The offer was declined. I sent an email asking for lowest price. No response. Oh well the search continues.
  • I purchased my RV with very low miles (not quit 5,000 in 2011 on a 2007). The first owner had passed away and the RV sat a few years. The second owner did a lot of work and used it some then kids went into HS and the family quit camping as other events got in the way. I was concerned about the low miles but everything worked fine. I had expected to need brakes and shocks, but four years and 25k miles later there are no issues with those. The paint and undercarriage looked new. The roof was in great condition as the second owner stored the RV indoors.
You have to look to know. I wound up paying a small premium for the low miles. But the RV was optioned the same as if I had ordered it from the factory down to the color of the exterior and interior.

  • Unusually low mileage is not always a bad sign. It would be wise to have any used rig checked over by a pro truck mechanic. The entire brake system should be checked and brake fluid changed, brake calipers should be checked for sticking. The engine cooling system and dash AC should be checked. Tires may be unsafe due to age and sitting parked. Run all appliances in all modes to verify they are working properly. Have owner/dealer run fridge overnight to verify that it is working. Run RV generator, roof AC and microwave at the same time.

How many times have you read a real "tale of woe" about a low-mileage used rig??? May be a lot of "hearsay" about this and other subjects.
  • I agree on the high price. In fact I told the owners I couldn't come close to their asking price. I feel 35k is an acceptable offer.
  • That sounds high to me. The fact that that is the payoff is irrelevant - sellers problem not yours.
With a unit that old, with that few miles you can assume that most of the systems have had little regular use and that is never a good thing. Generators, furnaces, refrigerators, AC's, pumps etc., do better with regular use and maintenance. Also as noted the tires are probably shot/timed out and that is another $1,500 to factor in.

    As always.... Opinions and YMMV.

  • I have found in my vacation travels that low mileage is not that uncommon. People travel but a short distance from home. My friends use there RV regularly, but unless they are taking a big vacation they drive 20 miles over the Santa Monica mountains to camp a week at the beach. Things to look for: The tires will need to be replaced, they have aged out. If it was stored with the frig in operation (we always keep ours plugged in) then have the frig checked for if stored out of level it could cause damage. Those would be my major concerns.
    Best, and Happy Trails.
