Those blasted drawers!!!!

I have a 97 Allegro Bus. Two of the three drawers under the "big closet" in the hallway have broken caster pieces. I would just rather take the drawers out and have a door made up and use the space as a cubby for boots or whatever. Would it be ok support wise to cut the two pieces out that supported the front of the drawers and make one large opening? There is already nice carpeting down underneath.

Thanks, Kay

Mine don't open while traveling. They hardly open at all. The tracks are broken at the back by the wall on two of them. The long drawer track fits into a piece that fits into a bracket on the wall and both the piece and bracket have broken tabs.

  • I got a link through facebook on stylish ways to hide a kitty's litter box and got to thinking that if we were to take the cat with us that cubby could easily be THE SPOT for it to go into. Then maybe all I would need would be a little curtain on it.

I would like to invite you to come visit me at Thousand Trails Carolina Landing.

Now.. This is not for the usual reason.. Here is the reason... In days of old the park was slightly larger than it is now, They had a Sales building on the corner of Durham and Tugello Heights,,,, but they closed the sales division here and moved what sales they do do to a smaller building, Sold the old sales building to a former park manager (Retired). he now runs a cottage business called "Concepts in wood".. Yup, he is a cabinet maker.

And that's the reason for the invite.

Well thank you kindly and I'll tell ya what! After our trip to California (if I can't get a door made there) we are planning a trip to the SE hopefully the following year (I've just got to be in Miami once in my life when it's 10 below zero here in Wisconsin) I will gladly take you up on your offer. Assuming that you are in one of the Carolinas?

  • I got to thinking (uh oh) I've got two master carpenter cousins I'll be seeing on our month long trip to California who are set up to whip up a door in probably a half an hour and do a really nice job so I think I'll shove the drawers back in for now and worry about other things! There's enough storage on that bus that we're not going to miss that few feet of space anyway. The top drawer still works fine.

While I'm on the subject....do those drawer casters have to be ordered for some special place (Tiffin parts) or can they be picked up anywhere like Home Depot or Lowe's?
  • I think that you would be OK to remove those. They are usually held in by angled screw holes on the backside (similar to those made by a Kreg Jig). You might be able to make a door using those drawer fronts as a false front on another board.

You should have vertical pieces of wood on each side and horizontal pieces of wood where each drawer is. It would not cause any problem removing the horizontal pieces but I would leave the vertical pieces to make sure that the top of the cabinet is properly supported. Attache your door hinges to the side vertical piece of wood.

Yes, that's what I meant. I want to remove the horizontal pieces. The rest of the cabinetry will remain intact. It just seems easier to have a little wooden door made than to hunt down a place that sells the right drawer pieces.

    Thanks, Kay
