Tranny/OD/Tow Haul

Driving a 2014 Winnebago Sightseer and pulling a Pontiac Vibe(on dolly)....I use the tow/haul mode on the transmission. If I set the cruise at like 60mph, when I hit a uphill, the tranny shifts and rpms will run way up to around 5,000...normal running at 60mph produces rpms of 2-3k....is running at 5k, acceptable? Don't like doing it for a long stretch. I have been backing off the cruise and just driving normal, even tho' speed drops down as I climb. Basically the same happens when going downhill. Engine will drop gears to slow down and rpms jump. Responses welcomed.

From your description it sounds like the Ford V-10 with a 5 speed transmission is that correct? If the constant down shifting and high rpms bother you as it does me, don't use cruise control. The constant down shifting and up shifting will wear out the transmission sooner the higher rpms won't because the engine is designed for it. I installed a vacuum gauge in mine so I know when it will down shift. I give it more gas on an approaching hill then the slowly back of the throttle as I climb preventing constant down shifting and up shifting during the climb. On long hills where I know it will down shift I manually down shift and leave it in that gear until I reach the top.
  • The shift programming when the cruise control is active is a bit more aggressive with the down shifts then when in manual drive. Plus you can control the shifts a bit with the throttle and allow a bit of speed to bleed off and possibly avoid the dramatic down shift with the cruise control off. The V10 is a high RPM engine plus it has an electronic rev limiter so you're not hurting the engine at 5000 RPM. The higher RPM is up in the maximum torque range of the engine and you'll have a higher coolant flow rate keeping heat down.

If you do decided to try a programming option such as 5 Star or Banks give them a call first. I can't confirm it but I think they can't change the shift pattern when cruise control is active. Sound proofing the engine cover (aka dog house) will go a long way to cutting back the sound and heat.
  • Ford chassis? This can be normal if you are running with the cruise control on - it's just trying to maintain your speed. I suggest you do a search on 5 Star Tune. This is the one thing I recommend for all Ford engined motorhomes as it makes things much more drivable and far less screaming engine noise.
  • It seems like the MH is doing what it is programed to do. If you don't like 5000 rpm take it out of tow mode and you decide when to shift .You really shouldn't try to pull hills at 2-3K you need to at least be up in your torque range to avoid lugging the motor and give it a chance to work. 4000rpm shouldn't sound like it is acreaming and it will pull better but 5000rpm all the way up the hill won't hurt your motor.
