two questions

We have just bought a gas class A and I have a couple of questions.
First is about the Tow Haul having never used one I was wondering if you use all the time or just if you are in hills or mountains.
Second is the sofa cushions will not stay tucked in they keep sliding out and seem to slant down abit to the front anybody else have this problem and what did you do to fix it.
Thanks in advance
  • No Tom, what you have is just a switch that turns off overdrive, the 4 speed fords were all like this.

The newer 5 speed ford auto's have an "intelligent" tow/haul mode that is completely different.
  • I thought the tow/haul dropped the transmission out of overdrive into the drive 1:1 gear. No shift points are changed. Is this correct??

I had a 1994 Vectra on a Ford F53 chassis. On the end of the gear shift stalk was a button, This button dropped the transmission out of overdrive into drive. Was this the same as tow/haul???
  • Tow Haul just changes the shift pattern of the transmission and is beneficial in any area where the transmission is constantly downshifting. It does not hurt the transmission to leave it in Tow Haul in those areas.

Try putting rubber shelf liners under your cushions and see if that will solve your problem.

Tow Haul affects how the transmission shifts.. If it seems to be having problems staying in a given gear,,Engage Tow/Haul. else run normal.

Cushions.. I just keep tucking mine back in.
  • Some Velcro tape on the bottom of your cushions would probably do the trick.

Try the wide tape, and put two on the bottom of each cushion running from front to back.

If it doesn't work you can take it off.

The tow/haul modes is sort of like an engine brake. Very helpful when going down hill. Tap the brakes and it downshifts to allow the engine to slow you down instead of burning up your brakes, Tap the brakes again and it downshifts further. Near my house there is a 8-10% grade for 5 miles to get to the bottom of the mountain. I use the tow/haul mode and hardly need to use my brakes at all. Even towing the car. I've done it without the tow/haul mode and could smell my brakes at the bottom of the hill. I don't use it on flat ground or even climbing for that matter. It's also helpful in stop and go traffic as the engine helps "brake" you. You can certainly stop a lot faster and use less brake.

    No clue about your cushions.
  • Assume your sofa cusions are leather. They tend to slide when sitting on them. My sofa has the air mattrace inside so assume that is part of th problem. I haven't found a solution.
  • When towing, I have analyzed my tow/haul mode, and I'll mainly use it for downhill. It seems to give earlier downshifts. However, using the normal drive mode, I've found that I can influence the downshift on an uphill by changing the cruise control one or two mph just before the hill. If I want it to stay in a higher gear up the hill (quieter), but slow down a bit, I'll add one mph just before it starts up. Somehow, this delays the downshift quite a bit for some reason.

If I just want to stop it from downshifting twice into third on a hill(lots of power, but very noisy high rpm), I will leave the speed alone until it shifts out of lockup, then shifts to 4th, and right before I expect it to shift to 3rd, I decrease it 1 click on the cruise (1 mph), and once more if it is a long hill.

This is what happens when somebody drives too much, their mind wanders, and you try this kind of stuff. Seriously, it saved me from paying a lot of money for software rewrite for the shifting pattern ("chip for the engine").

On my pickup truck, I use the tow/haul mode for towing, but it's not towing an rv usually.
  • Assuming you are speaking of a motor home on a Ford F-53 chassis, we do not use the Tow Haul on flat or slightly hilly terrain. Sometimes I turn it on and off frequently as the conditions change.

Cannot help on the couch cushion issue. Mine are tight and stay put.
