water leak around engine cover.

I have a 2004 Itasca Sunova, same as the Winnebago Sightseer. I have had very few problems with this MH but this one has go me going. I have water leaking inside into the carpet on both sides of the engine cover. At first it was only on the left side. So I thought it was condensation dripping from the AC vent which is directly above the wet spot. Here in the PNW we get a lot of condensation, I do mean a lot! I put a bowl under it to catch any drips and nothing came out over two weeks of very wet cold rainy weather, but the carpet is still wet. I have checked everything I can think of but the only place it could be coming in is around the gasket on the engine cover. I have pulled up the engine cover and the gasket had about a six inch split in it, but I don't see how this much water could be coming through that split from condensation. There is a groove on the inside of the gasket (the passenger compartment side) and it had water in it. I suspect that it is what it is for but it doesn't appear to have anywhere to drain the water too. I glued the split back together and will be ordering a new gasket.

Has anyone had the same problem. If so did replacing the gasket fix it?
  • Your water may be coming from the bottom of your windshield. Winnebagoes are known to have rust around the windshield due to water getting in around the rubber moulding on the outside of the windshield. Try putting some black moisture resistant tape around the top of the rubber moulding next to the glass on the bottom of the windshield and check for wet carpet after the next rainfall. I had to do that on the top of the moulding of my windshield.
  • Thanks. Good Ideas but I have already done that. When it first happened I automatically assumed it was coming from somewhere else than the cover. But I have found nothing. I even pulled the dash off looking for leaks in the heating and cooling. But I am sure I could have missed something. By the way, nothing under the MH but right everything is wet anyway from all the rain we've had so right now it's too hard to tell. I've looked in the past and seen nothing.

I agree with mfox20 especially if you see the leak in you driveway(when not moving). I would look at your driver's side window to see if it leaks there first running down the inside wall under the carpet to the engine opening.
  • I would think the water might be coming from somewhere other than around the engine cover and just finding a low spot in that area. You may have a leak around a clearance light or maybe around the wind shield.

I had a slideout seal leaking that would make its way under the brake and gas pedal area with my front end being a little lower when parked on my pad. You might try elevating the front of the coach to see if it puddles somewhere else. With the coach level it might help pinpoint the leak area better.
