when does one have to replace LP tanks?

We have a 23', 2000 Fleetwood Jamboree & the last time I got my 14 gal LP tank filled, the guy said that since it's so rusty, I probably should get it replaced. I have never heard anywhere anything about ages of LP tanks. What do you guys suggest? We dry camp a lot, so the tank gets a good workout every year. I don't think there's much of any paint left on the tank, it looks that bad, but the controller etc looks fine.
Any help would be much appreciated!

    They are supposed to be "re-certified," not replaced, when they are 12 years old, and then ever 5 years thereafter. Most local LP Gas companies can do it for you.

    Not sure if what DogFolks says if correct for motor homes, I think that info if for portable tanks. Not sure will wait and see what else is posted. Dick

    Good Point. The rules may well be different because they are mounted.

    That applies to "cylinders" not perm mount motor home propane tank as the OP has.

    From what I've read, a DOT tank has to be re-certified after 12 then ever 5 yrs and ASME tanks do not need re-certification. Some indicated the relief valve on ASME tank should be replaced every 10 yrs. You need to check tank to see if it is ASME or DOT. I think majority (maybe all) of permanent mounted MH tanks will be ASME. As mentioned, the DOT tanks are also referred to as cylinders.

    There is no obligatory replacement or recertification date on your solid-mount horizontal cylinders on the motorhome, but if a filler says it is too rusty to deal with, take it elsewhere for a second opinion. If they both say it's too rusty, then have it replaced.

    Every couple of years I scrape and wire brush any loose paint and/or rust from the ASME tank on our MH then prime and repaint as needed with spray on Rustoleum. An easy preventive maintenance job and our 10 year old tank still looks new. No worries about a leak from external corrosion.
