Better Wired Sound At Home Corded Telephone?

what about wifi calling? If you had access to wireless internet. I know it may not be common where you are, but it was a thought.

I would suspect the land line carrier is to blame for the sound quality, rather than the handset.

Like AM radio versus satellite radio.

If you have a good internet connection then magicjack may be the answer for you.When I lived in the Dominican Republic I used the MagicJack with great results even though the internet was slow by U.S. standards. I kept my local number and some people never knew I was out of the country.

The mini jack on telephone handsets are not always the same as an earbud jack, or something that will work with computer speakers. Most are for a headset (microphone and speaker) instead of stereo speakers. A few are set up for cell phone type ear buds (microphone and stereo speakers).

I suspect you are asking about good old fashioned hard wired phones as in "POTS".

Yeah, in having to deal with hearing impaired parents I tried some different amplified phones geared for the hearing impaired..

Tried a clarity brand, what a piece of junk.. Not only did it amplify the other persons voice but amplified YOUR voice on YOUR end, not to mention amplified EVERY NOISE in YOUR ROOM..

Was not able to use the amplifier on that phone, was a waste of $80.

Replaced that with a RCA big button phone, has some amplification (20 DB)which seems to be enough without being too much.. What a difference.

Thank you Gdetrailer. You are right on the mark. Amplification of poor sound is like listening to Donald Duck yelling through a bullhorn. The noise doesn't come through the phone line, electric signals do. The receiver amplifies it and the "speaker" vibrates, it's the amplification and speaker that fails me. This is why On Hold Music sounds like a coyote with it's --- caught in a barbed wire fence. I would have given up except for the Galaxy 4. I can hear speech fine because it is clear.
The land line service I have now allows wired and cellular calls to North America, and Europe free of charge no limits. Part of the internet package.

A cellular connection transmits with more bandwidth than a POTS line. Long gone are the days of POTS being a switched copper connection between two parties. A modern cellular call only travels through two D<>A conversions (where sound quality / data can be lost), and that's at either handset.

A modern POTS call might make 6+ D<>A conversions along it's travels. In my enterprise, the few POTS lines we have make three D<>A conversions inside our network alone and who knows what the phone company does with it.

Amplifying a low fidelity signal does not improve it's fidelity.

I use wifi and Skype from Mexico to the US. IIRC the cost is 2 cents/minute

Panasonic has about the best sound for a POTS cordless and supports multiple handsets. Both mic and speaker are superb. Only complaint is half-duplex.

If someone is blabbing on and on, can't get a word in unless I take it off speaker ;)

KX-TGA660 is my handset with me now. Range is pretty good, too, plus a speakerphone, voice message, and dialing number pad on the base station.

I put a similar one at an elderly relatives' house. Great sound, but can always hear every word on the TV in the background ;)
