I have a Wineguard carry-out satellite dish and am needing to buy a direct-tv receiver for a second connection to the bedroom. SD is fine and don't need DVR but would be nice to have. Can anyone tell me the models I should be looking to buy second hand that will work with this setup.
Thanks.

Being 12+ year customers, we put the squeeze on DirecTV for two R16-500 SD DVRs. Only running on one tuner, but still get to enjoy recorded material, pause/RW/FF etc. They can be set up on SWM to operate both tuners on one cable. Haven't done that- yet.

Short answer. No. SWM splitters only work when connected to SWM hardware and the dome does not have any SWM hardware. You could also buy a SWM8 switch and a PI29 power inserter and use these in conjunction with your DTV receivers but you still need one dedicated cable from the splitter to the each receiver.
With that setup you could get a Genie and client if you wanted and you would have 5 tuners with access to everything on the Genie on both TV's! You could also just do the 2 DVR setup if you prefer.

I think it's me! Mr. Satellite!
You will be able to use any of the DirecTV receivers with a model number of H24 or lower. If you want a DVR then I would buy an HR24. The only reason you would need the SWM hardware is if you REALLY wanted a DVR. The Genie allows you to watch and record up to 5 channels simultaneously (in SD only with a dome). The SWM hardware costs around $100 and is simple to self-install.
The additional advantage of SWM is that only one coax from the Carryout to the receiver would be required to power a DVR. Without SWM, if you want to use a DVR you must run both coax cables from the Carryout to the DVR.

Bill,
Thanks for the information.
I am really confused and know little about how all the possible hardware and configurations are affected.

If I purchased a couple of SWM MRV 2-Way Wide Band Splitter GREEN LABELSWM MRV 2-Way Wide Band Splitter GREEN LABEL. (I found this on E-Bay for $5.79). Would I be able to use the two cables from the Carry-out to each of the splitters, and attachรฉ a DVR model receiver to each splitter ? If I understand this, I would then be able to watch or record two shows on each receiver for a total of four at one time. Am I correct ?

I have a single RG-6 cable coming into my trailer at the rear, and have installed another near the bedroom (front). Would I be able to install the two SWM splitters inside the trailer near the receivers and simply run two short cables to the receivers? Do the splitters require any wiring or additional power other than what the dish and receiver provide ?

In effect I would like to run two separate RG6 cables from the
carry-out to two SWM splitters and then run 2 RG6 cables from the splitters to each of the two separate DVR's.

I know this is a lot of information to ask of you. If you don't feel like training a newby, I'll certainly understand, otherwise, I appreciate what ever assistance you can provide.

Thanks,
Barry

Not trying to hijack your thread but along those same lines we have a Carryout and just bought a new trailer and both the receivers sit behind frosted glass cabinet doors. The current receivers we have are IR so the remotes won't change channels unless the doors are open. I am trying to find SD receivers that use RF and will work with the Carryout so we can change channels and not have to have doors open.

Howdy!

We also have a new 5er and I spent four days on the phone and even had a DTV tech come out. Only to find out that DTV does not have a SD receiver/remote with RF. I gave up and ordered a set of these X10 Powermind PM5900 remote control extender kit.. Our problem is we have three TV's and one receiver. I need to be able to control the other two TV's without going into the livingroom to do it.

According to my Directv guy it is a D12 (std def)and they work with every Directv dish SWM or not. I use mine with an 18in round, oval 3lnb while Rving and 5lnb SWM at home. No problems.

Mr Satellite will be along shortly, but I'd say no, you don't need that.

I was told by someone, a couple of years ago I needed to find a receiver that supports SWM (Single Wire Multiswitch). I have no idea what that means, but can someone point me to a unit that is compatable with the Wingeguard Carryout ?

Last time I bought one it was an R16-300 model.

I would think just the plain-jane standard receiver. Problem isn't the receiver, it's the access card.
