I've previously posted that in some areas all locals are transmitted in HD only, one of which is central Oregon. For those areas DTV supplies HD receivers for SD customers. I've wondered if HD viewing is disabled for those customers.

What areas of the country did you find this concern?

BTW I upgraded to HD.

Here in Tucson, AZ if you cannot receive 99 or 103 you cannot receive local Network programming of any kind. I assume that to mean that the locals are available only in HD.

networks are 'spotbeamed ' to your billing zipcode. as you travel a distance away from there, you will lose those channels. You can call your provider to inform them of your new location, in which case they might authorize you to the local programming for that zip code.
You can no longer get your 'home'channels away from home or distant network channels via All American Direct.

The OP has an 18" round antenna-not capable of receiving the DirecTV HD programming. If he calls and changes locals, as he did, but the locals are not available in SD then he would not be able to receive the locals at all with that antenna. There is no way around that problem other than to get the proper kind of antenna that can receive all 3 satellites.
Also, All American Direct is Dish Network and he was referring to DirecTV. DirecTV still does allow distant network services and they are available in HD or SD so the OP could use that service seamlessly with his 18" round antenna and use his Batwing to watch the local news and weather.

We're fullimers and from the gitgo have had east coast and west coast feeds with our DirecTV and never had a problem receiving SD signal with our VuQube.

We could not get SD signals in some areas (zip codes) in Indiana, along rt 80, at several campgrounds.
I have been putting off switching to HD, as I have very good luck setting up our portable dish. Even in a area with a lot of trees.
Also, I think that the HD satellite dish will be harder to set up, for example in areas with trees. instead of getting one signal, I will have to bring in 3 signals.

Well you are lucky. We tried to get East-West programming. However, Direct tv, says that if our address had SD, we could not get the East-Coast signal.

They change this situation a lot. I never had a problem either with SD, but that was years ago. You could also get either or both, but now it's just both.

Even though DirecTV says you can get either/or, many users are reporting that they CAN get both these days if you ask. You might have to ask several but they are offering both. I believe only one set would be in HD but it is possible to get both and it's only $5/month more.
