DVR Needed

I have a DirecTV account with my motorhome. I do not have a home DirecTV account, at home I subscribe to a cable TV service.
I have an old Kingdome on my coach roof (mfg 2006).
I have also been using a DirecTV DVR (also old) that recently bit the dust.
While it is an original DirecTV DVR, it is no longer owned by DirecTV. I was given ownership of the DVR about 7 years ago, so it is mine to do what I want to with it.

I want to outside purchase another DVR, no frills, not intending to dub any recordings to a disc, just want to record and watch TV via the Kingdome to the DVR to the TV.
I also have another self-owned DirecTV receiver (non-DVR) in the coach bedroom.
So, I am looking for suggested DVR's that will serve my above-stated purpose.
All advice appreciated.
  • Thanks for the follow up. I was incorrect in saying you should get an R-12. The R-15 was the last SD DVR and a much better choice over the R-12 which I believe was the TIVO version.
  • In closing out this thread, I will mention that I have requested DVR replacement from DTV. They are sending a R 15 as a replacement.
    Thank you for your responses.
  • Keep in mind that a stand alone DVR like Tivo will not give you satellite TV reception. You must have a DTV DVR or DTV Tivo unit (do not buy one of these as they require a phone line to update the program guide) to receive DTV programming. The R12 was the last SD DVR before they moved to the H series receiver.

If you are going to use Direct you have two basic and several secondary choices

    1: Another unit from Direct.
2; TiVO.. they still sell 'em
3: There are some computer packages like Hauppauge WIN-TV Replay Edition. These can control your sat receiver. I DO NOT KNOW if they do HDMI but they do A/V (Red/White/Yellow)

Several competitors of TiVo too many to list. .GOOGLE DVR
  • Every DirecTV receiver sold today belongs to DTV and must be returned to DTV when you end service or replace the receiver. They called it a leased receiver but there is no lease fee, it's just a way that DTV maintains ownership.
If you can find an old R-15 DVR (SD only) that's about all you need. Since it will likely be used you will need to call DTV with the registration information to verify that is can be reactivated and you will likely need to buy a new card for $20. If you go new then it will be an HD DVR and the HR-24 would be your best choice. Any receiver with a model number of 25 or higher will require SWM hardware which you don't current have with your dome antenna. The SWM8 hardware can be added to many domes but I am not sure you would have success with a 2006 King Dome.

weaKnees and Solid Signal are a couple of good sources but as far as I know all current DTV equipment belongs to DirecTV whether you purchase one or they supply one to you.

Yeah, they've got a funny way of selling these if you want to buy rather than rent. When you buy it thru someplace like SolidSignal it is sold at a discount provided by DTV. Then when you try to activate it they'll tell you that since you bought your receiver at a discount you have to sign up for two years of service before you really own the unit.
