Getting used to Kindle Paperwhite

I need some encouragement. Just got the new Paperwhite yesterday and I'm not loving it. I'm hoping there are other folks here that can give me some tips on holding the darn thing. I've had the keyboard style Kindle since 2009 and it still works great - I just upgraded for the lighting.

I read at night in bed. That's my main reading time. I'm used to holding my old Kindle with one hand and being able to turn the pages with the side buttons without using my other hand. With the Paperwhite I can't hold on to the thing and take my thumb hold off to tap the screen. I can see how this could easily be done while sitting up and holding the Kindle in a more or less horizontal position, but when in bed I hold it in a vertical position.

Admittedly I've only had it for less than 24 hours, but my disappointment is large. I will give it some more time, but might send it back and stick with my old one.

Anyone else had this problem and solved it? Would a case help?

Thanks for the responses, folks! I must say that just discussing it here made me think it over a bit and I think I've come up with a solution... I made suspenders for the Kindle! 2 wide elastic pieces in an X on the back with loopies that go over the corners. I stick my 4 fingers under the X and my thumb is free to tap to turn the page. Adds .2 oz. :)

You could market that! Very clever. I'll probably experiment with that concept!
  • I switched from the old Kindle with buttons to the Paperwhite and have had no issue reading in bed laying down. I hold the book with my left hand and swipe the page (to go to the next page) with my right index finger. Way better than clicking the next page button. The Paperwhite is a huge improvement in my opinion.

  • Love my Kindle Paper White. Have the case with the cover that shuts it off when I close the cover. I guess I put a finger between the cover and the Kindle to balance it in one hand leaving my thumb to tap the edge. Have not really thought about it. I like how it syncs with the Kindle app on my phone so I can switch back and forth and not lose my place.

  • I have been thinking about upgrading to the paper white. I have the original Kindle mounted in a cover with a pullout LED light in the top corner. Cover about $50.00. It has always worked well with over 50 books on it, and using the internal batteries for the LED. After reading here, I may not upgrade because the LED works well at night in bed when I read. I have four of my own kindle novels published with a fifth on the way, so I am always concerned about how well the Kindle presents the text, so I may still upgrade to check it out.

The Tethered Scalp, The Land of Bloody Headwaters Gold, Death Rides the Bannack Trail, and The Collectors! Capturing Solar II.

Mine works great. It's over three years old (as is my Kindle) and still performs flawlessly.

I like the idea of the built-in lighting of the Paperwhite, but I also like page turn buttons. In the winter I read in bed with my hands wrapped in the quilt. I can still press the page turn button. It wouldn't work so well to have to tap or swipe.

  • I usually read mine lying down, hold it in my right hand, and change pages with my left hand index finger.
I have the earlier one also, and prefer the side buttons. Like the OP, I upgraded because of the lighting. I wish they had added lighting to the older version instead.
  • I don't have much of a problem- I read in landscape mode, and if I hold it with my right hand, have no trouble shifting my thumb to page up.
I do really like the Fintle Folio case- turns it on and off by opening the cover, and makes it more "book like".
This is my first Kindle, so I cannot compare to the original.
