I have a NOOK instead of a Kindle, for various reasons, and usually have a number of books loaded, and lots more on hold at my local library. All of which I access online.

I like to use an application called calibre to manage my free ebooks...

I have an old kindle 2 that i love but recently i been using my ipad.....of course sitting in the sun outside. Nothing beats e-ink..

As someone who has used Kindles for years now . . . don't hold your breath on getting anywhere near eight weeks out of the battery. That usage is based on very limited reading time--thirty minutes a day and one page turn per minute. Most people who buy e-readers are avid readers who spend much more than thirty minutes a day reading, and they tend to read at a much faster rate than one page turn per minute unless they're using the smallest font (which most of us over 50 don't use).

But the battery life will still be very, very good.

Correct i usually get like 2 weeks out of it with reading 90 min a day...seems to get less and less every charge

Since I get books from sources other than just Amazon, I use Calibre for all my books. I added 2 features to Calibre, 1 to show on which device (I have 3, 2 tablets and 1 Kindle) the book is, and 2 if I have read the book.
AS far as the battery goes, the Kindle battery is like a lifetime compared to the 8 'hours' that tablets are good for.

My wife and I are big into library checkouts. The problem is that new books have long waiting lists and when they become available you can only check them out for 3 weeks maximum. The 3 week part is OK but my problem is that I get on the list for 3 or 4 books and they all become available at the same time. You can't drop down the list. If you're not ready for a book when your time comes you have to start at the bottom of the list. I get 3 or 4 books and can't get them all finished unless I dedicate a lot more time for reading that I do now.

I have asked the person in charge to change the system so that you can bypass a book on your list without dropping off and starting over. It should be better for everyone and keep people from tying up books they can't get around to reading. So far, no success.

I like to read, but am slow to change to the Kindle style of ereader. My Granddaughter has a Kindle and loves it. I am seriously thinking of buying a Kindle..just slow in making the change. What is it that you like about the ereaders and what type is your favorite?

My DW and I both have readers and use them exclusively (and we read a lot). IMHO the brand of reader doesn't matter as much as getting one that has an e-Ink screen which can be read in the brightest sunlight. Lots of people buy color screens because they want their readers to double as tablets. That means you end up with an LCD screen that washes out in sunlight.

We happen to have Sony readers and are very satisfied with them, but if I were to buy one now I would look for the ones that have built-in LED lighting.

If you don't connect to the internet your Kindle has no idea what date it is. Unless you're using a tablet like the KindleFire. The e-ink Kindles are pretty dumb about the date. So, theoretically of course, if you didn't connect to the internet after the due date you could still read your book until you finished it. You won't be able to wirelessly load books, but you could read the book past the due date, although that would be gaming the system a bit, nudge, nudge, wink, wink.
