Good Sam "TRIP IMPORT" (RVND 7725)

When a trip is imported from the Good Sam's online "New Trip Planner" I am only getting the departure and destination locations imported to the RVND.

The "planned" route on the web site is not imported. The RVND recalculates and I get something entirely different.

What am I missing here?

When you go to export the trip to your GPS, you first need to install the Dock Software from the Rand McNally site.

    The following is also footnoted:

"Supports the Good Sam GPS and all Rand McNally RVND devices. Importing trips to the Rand McNally RVND 7710 or RVND 5510 requires purchase of Liftetime Maps."

  • "Miles Away" and "1775",

Bingo! I defined a few waypoints between the origin and destination to force a particular route and got what I was looking for. (I especially do this in areas which I am familiar.) The drag feature to change your route online is a great tool, similar to Yahoo maps et al.

The imported waypoint(s) are defined as a "Stop" (checkered flag) along the way to the final destination. So if you have several imported waypoints, you will see several "Stops" before the final destination.

Therefore in the 7725 "Detail View" and "Highway View" of the trip you are limited to the first Stop.

However, you can see the entire trip in the "Summary Map View" and "Trip Summary."

If there's supportive documentation for the GoodSam import feature it's sure is hiding/lacking.

I'm happy the way things are working now. I didn't want to give up on the 7725 because I really like how it works while on the road and the use of the Rand McNally Dock.

    Thanks for the help.
  • For longer trips we carry the GS trip route print out. It has good ideas along the way for potential parks to stop at when needed. We then use the Rand McNally to route to the park by name.
  • Just a guess, they may have to go in as POI's. I would call Rand McNally Tech support and ask them. I agree, if it doesn't work as advertized, it's a waste of money.
  • This is true for all mapping software to a GPS route download. The start, waypoints, and end locations are transferred and then the GPS calculates its own route - sometimes in a way that you may not want. To make sure I get my GPS following the trip route I want, I put in more waypoints between the waypoints that are involved with my trip which will force the route in the GPS to go the way I want. And with the RVND - as has been said - it is going to calculate according to your RV spec so don't force changes without checking why it routed you that way first.

Never tried but keep in mind that the RM also calculates based on your RV specs so that might explain a different trip route?

Yeah, I fully understand that point. Thanks.

If what I am experiencing is accurate, the way it's labeled is incorrect: "Download trips to your Good Sam GPS"

It does not import/download the "trip."

It only imports/downloads the the departure and destination; nothing in between.

IF that's the case...the feature is worthless IMHO
