How can I update to Windows 10?

My laptop came with Vista, but the day I bought it, I blew that away and installed XP-pro. When it crashed a while back, the guy who repaired it updated it to Windows 7 because XP support was going away. It was a properly licensed version - I get all updates, etc. The only thing I didn't get was the little icon that allowed update to Windows 10.
Attempts to upgrade to Windows 10 on-line require a license key. I don't have one, and the guy who installed Win 7 is no longer available.
Is there any way around this?
Thanks

As others have said, it is possible that the license key for your copy of Win 7 is not valid, or that your old laptop doesn't meet the hardware requirements for Win 10.

I highly recommend Belarc Adviser (free) also. The Windows 7 Product Key is rather well hidden in your Windows Registry but Belarc Adviser will find it for you, along with tons of other information. If you want something simpler, I recommend " MagicalJellyBean" program which is designed to just want you want ... find your product key. It is free at: MagicalJellyBean

Two possibilities.

1. At some point in time laptops started including an extra security key which only allows the original installation to be seen as valid. Even reinstalling Vista from a different disk than the original would not be seen as valid. So your Windows 7 install would also not be seen as valid and would not get the free upgrade.

2. It is possible that there is some hardware requirement that did not meet the Windows 10 requirements.

Are you doing an upgrade install to Windows 10? That's the only way it will read the existing Windows 7 key. Do not upgrade any other way if you want to preserve your free upgrade possibility. Of course there's always the chance that your Windows 7 licence is not valid too...

X2 on non-registered software... I imagine your system is still registered with MS as the XP system which is not authorized to be upgraded.

Those that were properly registered with MS got the upgrade automatically...

If you can prove you are registered with MS then the next step is is my older operating system in the list to be upgraded...

I think the new WIN 10 SOFTWARE is around $100 so that may be your only solution... The older machine probably are not setup with enough storage space or RAM speed to run the new WIN10... Compare your old machine with the specs of the DELL INSPIRON 17R5737 to get an idea what you might need to have...

Also check in with QVC and HSN for the very good deals on TOP OF THE LINE DELL and HP Laptops already on WIN 10... They come with many program extras and ready to work... These machines really scream speed wise... They sell for around $600 and both have the easy six month payment plan with no interest. My monthly cost was around $109 a month for six months... They wanted to lease me the new MS OFFICE 365 but my old MS Office 2009 loaded up just fine...

I replaced all four of my computers (Both desktop and Laptops) here doing this and just finished paying for the last one in September...

That link works if you have a valid product key. I don't think there is a way around this if you don't have a registered copy of Windows on your computer.

Older Windows like Vista and XP are not eligible for the free upgrade, You may need to find Win 7, and then try Win 10.
I am not sure if the machine will even support Win 10.
