No signal on rooftop dish. Question on setting up portable

For the first time in the two years we've had our rooftop mounted dish antenna, we are unable to get through the trees to get a signal.

If we set up a stand a lone dish, what do we have to do about the fact that the Directv Tivo boxes are set up and attached to the rooftop antenna?

Before we started fulltiming, we would bring a tivo box from home, run a cable through the window and we'd be good to go.

Now, since the boxes are hooked into the roof top antenna, is that going to present a problem for a stand a lone dish?

Do we just hook the cable into the outside connection?

On the back of the DirecTV receivers are one or two LNB connections..

For each connection you will need

1: A/B switch, low cost is ok, need not be a "High Isolation"

Some RG-6 and connectors (And the tool to install) NOTE pre-assembled cables are OK but they use cheap connectors.

A ground block or a bulkhead connector.

Optional part: If the receivers are mounted in a front overhead cabnet as mine are.

Run some RG-6 down teh "A" pillar (The pillar just behind the windshield) so it's under the dash, Then route it outside, I drive a gasser so it went through the firewall via an existing hole.

Route it to a mounting spot. paying attention to high temp places like exhaust pipe (AVOID THOSE) and mount either a ground block (if inside a compartment) or a through wall (if that's where you park it) Mine is on the brake bell crank bracket.

This/these cable(s) hook to the "B" input on the switch
Existing roof cable to that "A" (As in Above)

A short RG-6 Jumper to the receiver (1-2 feet should do it)

Now,,, With the switch on "A" hook up the ground mount.. (Tripod dish) slide the switch to "B" and reset the receiver to "Mate" it to the antenna (DISH network instructions follow). When it comes time to pack up, SLIDE to "A" before you unhook (And reset yet again).

Dish... No reset needed, instead, once hooked up, Point and do a CHECK switch when camping. WHen you pull out and clear the tree, Let the roof antenna lock on and do another CHECK switch.

And that, folks, is all there is to it.
  • If you have a coax connector that is labeled "cable tv" in a bay outside, you might try connecting your portable dish to that. That run of coax usually goes to a switch box near the TV before it hits a splitter. Take the coax end at the switch box off, and connect it to your sat. receiver input. You may need a jump cable to reach it. It is probably only RG59 instead of preferred RG6 but I used RG59 years ago to do exactly what I am suggesting. That was however, before HD.
  • It really depends on how your rig is wired, but if you only have a single exterior coax input, the sat signal will more than likely run into a splitter and not reach your sat receiver. Best thing to do is practice setting up at home and figure out if it is possible to run satellite signal through exterior coax input or if you have to run it through the window as you have stated doing before. We use a Directv Slimline 5 HD dish (on a homemade stand) and HD receiver and with a minor modification to the splitter in our entertainment center, we can view cable or satellite from our single exterior coax input.
  • What ground antenna do you have? What receiver are you trying to run?
Typically a DVR has two inputs, so you need a dish/LNB with at least two outputs for each receiver if you want all of the functions to work. A single LNB output will work, but you will not be able to watch TV and record at the same time. Depending on receiver type and if you have a B band converter or not you might need to add that between the receiver and dish. Too many options and not enouh answers to go any further.
  • You would need to hook the connections from the portable dish right to the receivers directly. No switches, no splitters but directly in.
