Old Ipod to listen to MP3 Audiobooks

I am using a Clip+ to listen to my audio-books. Love it -- no problems. However, it is "getting old" and shows signs of been "sick". Looking for a backup/replacement. I noticed on eBay that I can pick up an older generation Ipod for about 1/2 the price of a used Clip+. The only use I will make of the Ipod is to listen to audio books.

Question -- Do you think an older model of Ipod will do a good job of playing Audio books?

I tried to use on an ipod for my mp3 books. Between the idiot itunes and the ipod , it wasnt worth the huge effort. I now have 6 Clips , and everything is great and easy. What is more simpler than drag and drop?

I use my old original iPod as a bedside radio.
I listen to MP3s, podcasts and internet radio.
It's also an alarm clock.
I often roll over on it while sleeping get all tangled up in the earbuds.
Still going strong after four yrs

I tested audiobooks on my old iPod Touch.

Could not get library Overdrive app to run because my iPT is too old to update it. However, that does not matter to you because you have MP3 files.

So I tried to drag some MP3 files from my computer to the music files on the iPT. No dice, but maybe just because I am out of practice.

Then, I got iTunes to take some MP3 files to the iPT by asking it to add them to Documents. Bingo. The files went there. They play on the iPT.

Also discovered along the way that you can download audiobooks from iTunes, so perhaps you could put your existing MP3 audiobooks there and then onto an iPod or iPT.

Not using an I pod here but I do use my old Samsung Galaxy Express for my E books and MP3 player

Do you borrow the books from a library? If yes, at least at my library the download format is MP3 and the file wants to open in OverDrive Media Console. The app for this says "Compatibility: Requires iOS 7.1 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch."

That said, perhaps an old iPod Touch? I have one, 3rd generation (before they had cameras) and use it for all sorts of apps, music, and files and am very happy with its performance. Have not tried this particular app yet, but will to test it for you if no one speaks up about anything else you can use.
