Second Bad Gas Hose from CW

After buying my weber Q at the Flagstaff AZ. store on Sept 27 2015 I returned the next day to get a gas hose to connect it to my small Propane tank. (I was not happy that NO WHERE on the Weber box did it indicate that you had to use those small camping canisters. Which caused me to make this additional trip to the CW store)

I used this hose about three times before it died. I had to replace it in Phoenix on October 3rd.

To make sure it was the hose and not the Weber or the tank, I first connected one of the Coleman canisters to my Weber...it worked. Thus the regulator was ok.

My propane tank was full and would run my generator with a different hose, So it was not the tank.

I connected the hose to the tank, turned on the valve and used a matchstick to depress the valve stem in the hose connector. Gas should have released. It did not. Meaning the Hose was bad.

CW Flagstaff replaced it. Gave me another.

Same problem with this hose. after about 5 uses it stopped working. Unfortunately I am now in Baja Mexico and replacing it is difficult if not impossible. And Now I am forced to use the MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE Coleman canisters for fuel for the BBQ. These are expensive here and hard to find.

I will be expecting MY MONEY back this Spring when I exit the BAJA. I will NOT accept another of those cheaply made hoses from CW as replacement.

CW needs to review this issue I am certain I did not get the only two defective hoses.

I have spent a few dollars at CW including a generator this year. I am NOT happy.

I would like a definitive statement from GSE by email that I can return this hose in late March or early April of 2016 when I return to the states from Baja.

I will await your (hopefully) quick reply.

    I've recently had "hose issues" with two separate Weber Grills, a 100 and a 1000. On the first, I just replaced the hose and it solved the problem. On the 1000, I replaced the hose and the tank, and still had the no light, low pressure issue. And yes, the match/screw driver test did provide gas. Upon calling Weber, they replace my regulator under warranty. When I checked the old regulator, it was full of an oily substance, that I understand (from the Web) is a common problem. After grilling with propane and using rubber connector hoses for over 50 years, this year is the first that I have had such issues. As of now, I am loathe to use the replacement cylinders, you can swap-out at many places, including Walmart. I'm convinced that that is where the issue is. I think it is the propane, and the oily substance is coming from the propane and is what is destroying the hoses, and in my case (and others) the regulator. It is not oil but is an oily, very acidic substance. I forget what one seemingly knowledgeable person on the web called it.

    I thought I would update this with the solution.

    I was finally contacted by a rep about one week ago and have come to an agreement.

    They met my demands and with a nice apology.

    Why it took so long to resolve is another matter.

    Better products will result in fewer man hour, inventory, and customer service costs.

    That would go directly to the bottom line.

    To CW response team: I have yet to be contacted by anyone about this hose issue and having CW take it back when I finally leave the Baja in March/April.

    I expect that this will happen very soon.

    If you understand how the hose works which apparently you may not, this simple test will tell you if the valve in the hose is operating properly.

    A wooden matchstick is the perfect size to be able to push against and completely depress the valve in the Grill end of the hose to release the gas. The weber standard connector used on small propane heaters as well has a long metal tubular "pin" that accomplishes the same thing.

    What this test will not tell you is which END of the hose is not working. But it is clear proof that it is the hose. NOT the propane canister...it ran my generator and was full, or the valve on the Weber (it worked with the Coleman Canister.

    If you have a better more accurate test please post it here.

    Hello Dodger - Thanks for the post! I have the hose but have yet to use it and don't want to find out if mine is defective when I do put it to use. The sharing of this type of information is what makes this forum such a valuable tool for all of us. Best wishes!

    Stuff happens. Manufacturers have glitches. Product is bought in large batches by companies, so when there is a Mfg.issue, there does tend to be a number of them, and quite often delivered to the same merchant. A small bump on the road of life. Have a good day!


    I am also sure that CW will do what is right. But given my circumstances of being in Mexico until spring, months after the purchase, I wanted a written understanding with CW about this issue so there was no hassle in the return.

    As for good customer service from CW. I have experienced both very good and frankly horrible. It depends upon which store and where you are. I am seldom in the same store twice in the same year or even the same state.

    As for the manufacturing issues, these I am well aware of having been in Manufacturing of some sort most of my life. But I also know what QC is and how it's done.

    Further there is no party in this that has more influence over the manufacturer than does CW. The issue with the manufacturer is not my fight, that belongs to CW/GSE.

    Well the connector on the weber is a standard connector. They of course want you to order their hose. That is more income and bottom line for them.

    If I had tightened the hose connection any more than I did I would have broken the connection or stripped the threads. This was not the issue.

    I am no fan of my Weber Q as a grill mind you. But this is definitely not webers problem.

    IF Weber has any problem it is that for the exalted price of the Weber q2000 it definitely should INCLUDE the hose.
