TracVision S3 upgrade to HD

I have a TracVision S3 stationary system hooked up to DirecTV that works great. However, I'd like to receive HD programming. KVH has an article on their website that discusses what's needed to do this here. I phoned KVH sales to get the part numbers and the rep told me that it's not technically possible to receive HD programming with an S3, despite what that article says, because DirecTV has changed their systems, and that I needed to purchase an RV1.

So my question is, does anyone have an S3 stationary system receiving DirecTV HD programming? If so, what are the part numbers of the additional products needed to do this? I want to verify what KVH told me given that they are trying to sell me expensive new hardware. Thanks in advance.
  • No, DTV didn't pay anyone to do anything. It worked for awhile and when it didn't that was the end of the story. Remember that DTV does not do anything or provide anything to support mobile satellite TV. The dome was not created by DTV but rather by the RV industry. The same holds true for the adapters. DTV did not know of them, care about them, support them or anything else.
The satellite TV providers provide satellite signal to what is assumed to be a fixed antenna mounted at a fixed location and pointed toward the satellites 24/7. Any other option for receiving that signal requires the support of the company who produced the antenna or your own knowledge on how to make it all work.
  • Thank you for the informative answer, backed with actual technical data, Mr. Satellite. Guess I'll have to stick with low def. I'd have been pretty upset had I purchased the upgrade referred to in the press release at the time and then it became obsolete quickly. Although I suppose everyone with DirecTV HD equipment then had this problem, so perhaps DTV paid to switch people over? Anyhow, thanks again.

That's a bit like saying that since the S3 brochure came out in 2002, it won't work either now, which is not the case. Are you saying that if I had purchased the HD upgrade in 2004 you know it wouldn't work now?

Actually, it would have worked when the data was published and the poster was correct in what they said. It did work then but will not work now. That's because when the information was published DirecTV broadcast their HD on KU band satellites at 110 and 119 which could be received by a dome antenna. They then launched 2 new KA band satellites located at 99 and 103, moved the HD programming to these satellites and killed the ability of a dome to receive DirecTV HD.

Note the date of the article. I think that time has come & gone.
  • From the Sats2Go website. We use Sats2Go in Houston for our satellite work and upgrades. He would know the answer.
The Selection of Open Faced vs. Domed Systems:
The choice is yours! Open faced antennas, will provide you with a greater reception opportunity for programming in DishNetwork, Bell Express Vu or DirecTV programming. If you currently have DishNetwork Dish500 or Super Dish, Dish HD or DirecTV HD satellite programming, this requires an antenna to have multiple satellite LNB's for your programming to come in simultaneously, you can only achieve this with an open faced antenna. If you use a domed antenna with this type of programming package, the antenna has to "toggle" between the two different satellite locations and can only truly support one (1) satellite receiver for proper functionality. If you select DishNetwork lower end programming package or DirecTV non HD programming packages, the domed antenna will serve you well for single, DVR or multiple receiver applications. With the open faced antennas, you do have to remember when breaking camp and preparing to move the RV that the antenna is stowed, whereas with the domed antenna, you can just drive away.
