2003 Toyota Tundra brake controller plug

I'm trying to find a brake controller to buy for my truck. The problem is, the plugs on all of the connectors for every brake controller I have seen don't match up to the plug i have installed in my truck (just bought it..had a brake controller installed in the past). Right under the steering wheel to the far right there are two screw holes where the brake controller used to be mounted and this plug: http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h312/earth2283/IMAG0673_zps7c29ab80.jpg

Is this a brake controller plug or does it belong to something else? This is what the typical brake controller plug looks like http://www.hitchanything.com/2003-2013-Toyota-Tundra-Trailer-Brake-Controller-Kit-90885-and-3040.html?gclid=CJi8w9KfgLkCFQee4AodAgoANQ

See how the white piece doesn't match the piece in the truck? What is going on here?
  • Yes, it is behind the left kick panel.
    It is white.
Mine had a dummy plug plugged into it.
I'm not sure why Toyota does this?
My truck came with a pig tail that is made to fit this connector.
It was laying in the glove box.
This is what I spliced my Progidy wiring harness into.
If you don't have that pigtail you will need to order one like the gentleman said previously.

    Earth,
I had a first generation Tundra like yours and I'm not sure where the plug is as the rv dealer set it up. Tekonsha shows part number 3040-P for ALL Tundras to present. I've got a 2007 Tundra now (Second gen) and that's what I used. On my 2007, the plug was behind the left side kick panel. On my old 2000 Tundra, the dealer hard wired it in as I did not have the tow package so did not have a plug, I assume. You might get more Toyota specific info off of one of the Toyota forums like Tundrasolutions.com, etc. I suspect if you don't have the factory tow package you don't have the plug for the controller.
  • Check out this discussion thread
I believe they are talking about current Tundras, but I think the older generation has the harness in the same place.

    From the thread wrote:
    Remove the driver's scuff plate
-Remove the left hand kick plate
-At the top of the panel you should find the plug. Mine was wrapped up pretty good to keep it from rattling. If i remember correctly, it also had a "dummy plug" installed in the harness.

    Hope this helps.
  • As mentioned already, the picture of the plug is DLC3 where diagnostic information is retrieved.
Your brake connector might be taped up to a wire harness under the left side of the dash. It might be behind or near the left kick panel or to the left of the steering column. Match it to the connector on your brake controller harness.
  • My plug was near the top of the kick panel and was nearly square. I will be reallly surprised if you don't have one. I assume you have a 7 way plug near your hitch.
  • I can't recall exactly, but I believe bgum is right. Look up a brake controller for your vehicle on etrailer.com and it will show you the right adapter harness. The plug you are describing sounds like the one for hookingcode reader for diagnosing a check engine light.
  • So if I don't see a plug on the left hand side, I am not set up for a brake controller? This plug must be for something else i'm guessing?
  • Your plug will be behind the kick panel by your left foot.
For a Tekonsha controller you will need part number 55-3040
