Ammo Container?

Interested in knowing how those of you that carry a lot of ammo store it while on the road. Do you have a separate ammo container or fire box specifically for it?

I am not asking about any gun regs, crossing state lines, laws or anything of the sort.
Just would like specifics on ammo storage.

Guess this kinda goes along with the zombie apocolypse thread :B

Mine's in factory boxes inside a military surplus ammo can. If I'm going to a competition match, they'll be in the plastic reloading boxes in my range bag.

Regarding the fire hazard, ammo not in a gun is little more than popcorn. Without the barrel chamber to hold the cartridge together, it just bursts apart and the flying brass (bullet mostly stays put because it's much heavier) doesn't even have enough ommph to go through clothing. Worst danger might be getting some shrapnel in your eye and any fireman should be wearing goggles already.

My question is why do you need to carry a lot of ammo? If you are a good shot, you shouldn't need much, unless you are planning on taking on an entire infantry. Your home has wheels igt? Just drive away. I'm a law enforcement officer and I don't carry or keep any weapons at home except heirlooms and there's no ammo for them. never have felt the need for them.

If just camping, I have only the ammo loaded in the guns.

If going to a shooting competition, I just stack all of it in their boxes on the floor.

Don't travel with much ammo, but the old military ammo cans, have gaskets and it stays dry and in good shape in them. Bought a bunch, of them, back when they were near worthless.

When it all goes bad it goes bad so quickly you won't have time to reach for an ammo box. If more than one mag is required (depending on circumstances) you might not have to worry about it. You who have been there know what I mean. Of course if you're talking "target practice" like Gary Cooper, boxes are a good idea. :W

That is why I was inquiring if anyone uses a fire safe for their ammo.
If a coach catches on fire, I am pretty positive it would go up in flames like a Christmas tree, so I doubt they could save it at all.
The safety concern would be for any nearby campers.

X2. I have to listen to shooting all day long at home from a gun club 4 miles away that illegally changed their shooting lanes and I don't really want to have to listen to it when I'm out camping in the woods.

I shoot mainly skeet and trap and occasionlly bring the .22. I have a bag with shoulder strap that's made for trap and skeet shooters and holds a few boxes of shotgun shells and I'll through a box of .22's in there from time to time. I normally don't bring the guns along when we camp. Don't own any center-fire rifle stuff.
