Ammo Container?

Interested in knowing how those of you that carry a lot of ammo store it while on the road. Do you have a separate ammo container or fire box specifically for it?

I am not asking about any gun regs, crossing state lines, laws or anything of the sort.
Just would like specifics on ammo storage.

Guess this kinda goes along with the zombie apocolypse thread :B

Thanks in advance.

To save a little weight, I use the plastic ammo cans you find at Cabela's and other sporting good stores. I haul them under the mattress at the front of the TT.

At least 1000 rounds for everything. Kept in Plano ammo boxes, then boxed in unmarked wooden boxes in various storage areas (not all in the same place.) Semi-auto assault weapons (his and hers) on a gun rack on the wall above one window. Shotguns under the bed and hand guns in the drawers on both sides of the main bed. Another in the toilet (just in case) but it's kept in a zip-lock bag with silica gel to keep moisture out. Extra ammo stored next to each.

When I carry ammunition, I carry it in the box the manufacturer sold it in.
I do not "child-proof" my house or RV. I "house break" my kids and grandkids!
If kids show up that are obviously not "housebroken", I watch them like a hawk! They can not be, and will not be, trusted!

I was shooting regularly when I went full time and had to tear down my reloading bench.

Before I hit the road I loaded up all of my .45 ammo. I started out with about 20k rounds in ammo cans.

The ammo cans worked ok for "bulk" storage. I do still prefer individual 50 or 100 round boxes for convenience at the range.

Most of mine is under the bed in a box. Some is in closet for easy access but dont anticipate needing more than what's in the gun and one magazine

Yup!! Keep my "on the road" tools in the ammo box. Store the ammo in a locking nightstand drawer or in any intruder that wants some.

The military style ammo boxes are heavy.

I noticed knock offs of them made of some type of plastic/PVC in out door stores. Might look at that.

Why would you want all that dead weight with you if full timing?

Drives me crazy. They are called magazines, not clips.

"A magazine is an ammunition storage and feeding device within or attached to a repeating firearm. Magazines can be removable (detachable) or integral to the firearm. The magazine functions by moving the cartridges stored in the magazine into a position where they may be loaded into the chamber by the action of the firearm. The detachable magazine is often referred to as a clip, although this is technically inaccurate."

"A clip is a device that is used to store multiple rounds of ammunition together as a unit, ready for insertion into the magazine or cylinder of a firearm. This speeds up the process of loading and reloading the firearm as several rounds can be loaded at once, rather than one round being loaded at a time. Several different types of clips exist, most of which are made of inexpensive metal stampings that are designed to be disposable, though they are often re-used.

The defining difference between clips and magazines is the presence of a feed mechanism in a magazine, typically a spring-loaded follower, which a clip lacks."

I reload and carry in lots of 50 plastic boxes. thinking about changing my boxes for something to get into faster.

If you have a vacuum sealer maybe think about using it to bag and seal ammo for longer term water proof storage. You can also bag the ammo in magazine size quantities for convenience. Then place it in an ammo can or other container if you need impact protection.

*corrected clip reference so as to hopefully prevent anyone from becoming crazy. 🙂

I have a military ammo can for each caliber of pistol, rifle and shotgun.
Several ammo cans.......depending on caliber.

They sit on the floor on my side of bedroom closet in 5vr.....along with range box and cleaning box
Pistols are stored in various location thru out 5vr and truck
Rifles/shotgun are in under bed storage compartment

Have used ammo cans for over 40 yrs.
Is it time for your medication or mine?
