Do you use a portable ramp because of your knees? Need help

I need to use a walking ramp instead of stairs to get in trailer because my knees become very painful after just a few days of using steps. Has any one found a portable and affordable ramp for people to use? Thanks for your help.
  • Port A Lift is the maker of the lift. http://myport-a-lift.com/rv.html
There is another thread that covers this subject that goes back around 6 months ago. Might do a search for it.
    Don
  • I have seen a coach fitted with a lift or elevator at the entry door. I never made note of who had it. Talk to the Mfg Rep. They may help or send you to someone that can do it, if it what you would like.
  • When you are traveling and staying at CG's there is a fine line on how much you can 'build' around your MH for a short stay and not have the CG owner getting concerned about it looking like you are a permanent camper and asking you to remove it. IMHO a few blocks for steps are a little bit less conspicuous.
  • Those concrete blocks are h-e-a-v-y! You can get 2'x2' Plywood squares from Home Depot or Lowes and screw 2x4 sections to them to get 2" high or 4" high platforms depending on which way you turn the 2x4s. I'd put one across the center as well as those on the perimeter. Paint them to last longer and mix sand with the top surface coat to make them non-skid.
  • I also found out they make '2 types' of cinder blocks.

I couldn't understand that although they looked identical on the shelf why one was cheaper? Clerk showed me that the less expensive ones 'weigh' way less. I.E. used in less load bearing construction.

The light weight ones can only be found at Lowes or Home Depot. Walmart doesn't carry them.

The second stop I bought the ones that weigh less. If not only for the fact that it was easier to put in the shopping cart! And my 'save my knees' project now cost even less money! :B
  • Thanks for the block suggestion. We have some at home and I will try it.
  • rockhillmanor, although not the original poster, I like the idea. I was thinking that would be a huge amount of weight to fuss with and haul and then I read you were doing it where you stay longer. That would work, when I am volunteering for 2-3 months at a time, I could stand $10 to make going in and out easier.
  • The narrow RV steps is what wrecked my knees twisting them so they fit on the step. After one season of full timing on the road I could barely walk.

A ramp would have to extend pretty far out to make the incline comfortable to walk down. Found out that pretty quick when I tried it. Too short of a ramp and you almost fall over going down it. That's why those dog ramps don't work for humans we are a lot taller than a dog!

What I ended up doing was buying flat square patio blocks and cinder blocks and placed them up and around the RV steps or up to MH without steps.

Make it is as wide as you need. I used the patio blocks around the cinder blocks so the step down was less for me.

The blocks are real cheap, about a dollar a piece at the big box stores! When I leave a CG and hit the road I just leave them. I ask the CG owners first and all so far have actually welcomed the gift.

Spending $10 to ease the pain in my knees IMHO is worth spending when I stay at a CG for more than a week.

My knees stopped hurting immediately after I started using the blocks instead of the RV steps.

The white is tape. I had a hard time seeing the step drop off at night so the white tape helped solve that problem for me.
